Look closely at that YTV ident, the rims are different on each side, I wonder if that was deliberate.

There didn't ever appear to be a definitive version of the chevron in existence; its design never quite managed to remain consistent between campaigns, as if the designers had to create a version from memory each time.

It's a relatively complex shape to perfect, perhaps just a case of software limitations mixed with human error.

One can only speculate on what might have been if Border had been bought by YTV and subsequently rebranded. Not only would "Channel 3 in Cumbria, South Scotland, the Isle of Man and north and west Northumberland" been a bit of a mouthful, but they would also have had a hell of a job fitting all of that on to an on-screen caption.

Given that the ultimate goal was to operate a generic "Channel 3" service, I doubt that would have been a subject of too much concern. Wink

Does anybody have any idea why Carlton retained the HTV brand but amended their idents to fit the Carlton scheme?

Why didn't they just rebrand it as Carlton?

I remember reading it was something to do with UMG holding a stake.

it was because Granada still held part of the company, I cant remember the full details, Granada own the full company, had to sell it off, Carlton only brought the transmission part, while Granada kept the production part????

Not according to Wikipedia, I hazard a guess that it was because Carlton got it as GMG (Granada Media Group) couldn't have a certain amount of franchises and UMB owned the building.

Its been changed!, I dare say this has happened when the page was slipt in two from HTV and ITV west and wales:

it should say the following:
Quote:
In 2000, Granada Media plc bought United's television interests, but at the time competition regulations limited the extent to which one company could control the ITV network, and were consequently forced to give up one of its ITV franchises. This resulted in a break-up of HTV, whereby its broadcast facilities and Channel 3 broadcast licence (and hence its advertising revenues) were sold to Carlton Communications plc, owners of Carlton Television, whilst the majority of production facilities were retained by Granada. Unlike Carlton's other ITV acquisitions, which were rebranded to use the Carlton name on screen, HTV's identity was retained on-air until 27 October 2002 when the 'ITV1' brand was introduced to most of the network.

I have to ask, Why did some ITV compaines care more about Summer mornings than others? this was not the case until around 1994. From that point its started to fall apart, with what can only be described as lazy scheduling by some compaines. Here are some of the listings:

When Grandstand was on BBC1, especially up til the late 1990s, the national regions on BBC1 sometimes opted out, mainly to show Rugby Union, such as the then 5 nations. This was when both games took place at nearly the same time. I recall BBC Wales always showed the Welsh rugby cup final live as well on Grandstand, as grandstand from wales.

So, turning to ITV, did any of the ITV regions opt out, say STV showing the Scottish Cup Final, as World of Sport from Scotland, or Wales or whatever? In that instance, they would show a mixture of some action that would be seen on the main WOS, as well as the main even on the opt out, with the whole lot being hosted from Scotland?

Here is a schedule from one Sunday in 2002 on ITV in the North.

Only about 6 months before national continuity started and the schedules were still dominated by regional variations.

This was during the period when ITV had become available on Sky so it was possible to see lots of regional idents. In the case here there would be many mentions of the station name 'Yorkshire', 'Tyne Tees' etc as many junctions were only going out in one region, and they would also pad for time with lots of regional trailers, which at the time were all being voiced by the same enthusiastic voiceover man. The strange 'Border Scotland' idents could also be seen. Notice schedule features that would never happen today, such as Granada showing a cartoon!
