Does anybody know of any interesting non-broadcast related side-interests ITV companies had?

Granada had hotels, motorway service stations and theme parks amongst other things

Border owned a company called "Green Star" who operated rides at Blackpool Pleasure Beach

UTV continues to own an Art Collection

Granada had a share in Liverpool FC at one point, and Carlton had so much of Arsenal aswell, this was that faze when Sky almost bought Manchester United outright. I remember Yorkshire Television used to do a bit of PC software in the mid 90s, most of it having nothing to do with their programmes.

Westward had an airline for a while (see under 'Air UK' in this link)

I know it's broadcast, but near the end Border had a network of radio stations, IIRC they generated more profits than the TV station.

Was Granada's TV rental company a national one? I'm pretty sure I saw an advert on YouTube for a similar business owned by Channel as well.

I seem to remember when I went on holiday to York when I was about five or six (so around 1996) there was a shop with a YTV logo on the high street. Don't know if it was a rental place or a general merchandise shop. I could have sworn it had a Tyne Tees logo on it as well.

Sorry for the confusion regarding my question. What I meant was, I've seen comments somewhere on the ether that Blockbusters was a victim of the Broadcasting Act, but I can't understand how that could possibly be so given Central were arguably the biggest winner of the system, both surviving and paying almost nothing for the privilege.

Alas you have to blame " ITV Network Centre" for that, remember "high road" went the same way, there must be a few other show that were also culled?

There were also in bed with Grampian with the ownership of Scot fm, UTV STILL holds many radios to this date does it not? STV used to own virgin radio, pearl and dean cinema , The Herald and Evening Times, Primesight (outdoor advertising) which have all be sold off.

You're correct! There was also a Yorkshire Tyne Tees shop in Scarborough and Gateshead Metrocentre, the Scarborough branch previously being called The Yorkshire Television Shop. They sold a few YTV related books etc but also general merchandise. The Gateshead branch was linked in some way to the company Chameleon Mirrors.

There was a YTV shop in Bailgate, Lincoln until they moved the newsroom to Sparkhouse Studios in 2006.

Only since 2005, so radio's a relatively recent thing for UTV Media.

I think the York shop (and the local newsroom above it) was initially a YTV operation until the merger with Tyne Tees, and was largely intended to show the people of York (who had a choice of TT or YTV) that Yorkshire considered it their patch.

You can't link directly to TV Ark clips. Which page is it on?

Found it, it's about halfway down this.

There was a YTV shop in Sheffield too, I think it doubled up as a reception area for the news operation.

I remember the one in Lincoln being closed on a Saturday but there was a big picture of Mike Morris on the wall. Lincoln was also a contended territory, in some places a 3-way battleground between Anglia, Central and Yorkshire.

For anyone interested, Granada Productions still exists, as part of ITV Studios, in Australia as Granada Australia. Complete with a small 'Part of ITV Studios' tag and the final Granada logo. You can see this tag on Come Dine with Me Australia, or Come Dine with Me Down Under as it is known here, at the end, after the credits.
