Re: Highway, from looking at episode details on the BFI database, it appears many editions in the series filmed outside of the UK were produced by Channel Television - Ulster Television took care of programmes filmed in the Republic of Ireland (at least five of them!), and a Christmas special filmed at Disneyland in Flordia was made by Anglia; ventures into parts of the UK in the Big Five regions were produced by neighbouring companies - e.g. London-area editions were shared between Anglia and TVS, Bradford was produced by Tyne Tees.

There was a clip on YouTube at the end of the 1986 Christmas special, where the endcap was billed "An ITV Production" with the ten regional company logos circled around it, not sure if the clip is online anymore.

Did the big 5, Thames, Yorkshire , ATV, LWT and Granada all get along with each other for the good of the network or did they hate each others guts?

Thames and LWT were NOT the best of friends ISTR...

Maybe not on a corporate level, but I'm told there was a great deal of 'low level' co-operation between them engineering wise.

Thought this was as good a place to ask as anywhere else, but is there much footage kicking about of Channel Television continuity/presentation (from the 90s and before)? YouTube doesn't seem to have anything (although searching for 'channel television' 'ctv' 'itv channel' etc brings back many unrelated results). Did Channel have live links at every junction back in the glory days? I've heard that it wasn't uncommon for snippets of WTV/TVS/Meridian etc to inadvertently get shown on the Islands.

Some really good Channel stuff has been popping up on this page recently including a truly horrifying attempt at covering the Meridian logo up during a promo:

I think someone on here may have linked this channel on this forum so thanks to them.

Thank you so much for that link. Some good stuff there! I agree, very odd and unsatisfatcory attempt to disguise the Meridian logo! Quick flash of Meridian News during the GMTV opt as well! Just what I was looking for. All-in-all though, quite smooth transitions in and out of 'network'. I wonder what that Grundy programme was (with the YTV presentation endcap) in that clip you linked to.

Shortland Street?

Wouldn't have had a YTV endcap on Meridian though, and it wasn't shown by YTV until 1995. I think it may have been some imported kids show that YTV were networking.

OK, why on Earth didn't they just completely replace that trailer's endboard? The way they did that looks totally unprofessional. Confused

Was it customary for all Channel promo endboards to use lowercase for programme titles?

Is the clock in that clip still mechanical even in 1994? Either that or it's a very good attempt at creating a shudder on the second hand digitally!

Does anyone know anything about the history of Border's playout? I read somewhere that it was being handled by Granada by the mid 90s (and therefore Leeds from 1998), but they seemed to retain their own announcers pretty late - 2000/2001 going by some of the clips on You Tube, which would tie in with Granada taking full control.

I'm not aware of the exact dates involved, but I believe Granada (ie. Leeds) handled Border weekend continuity for a few years whilst weekday continuity was still played out from Carlisle, and it was quite late in the day (compared to the other northern regions) when full playout control went over to Leeds.

Also, in around 1994, Border skipped episodes of Sons and Daughters, and other serials, to catch up with Granada and screen these via their feed - although this was well before Border became part of GMG.

Remember that as well, they also jumped over 100 episodes of Prisoner Cell Block H overnight when they merged schedules with Granada - remember the furore in the local papers

I'm not so sure.

Grampian would have been unlikely to have had the facilities to package a film live and send it to HTV. HTV might have, but I strongly suspect that they'd have been played out independently.

Whenever I saw Tyne Tees play out films independently (and a lot of US TV for that matter that was shot on 35mm), it would *always* be done live from telecine. I never recall them once using a pre-packaged tape for such material.

Can't see other smaller companies being much different. They had their own 35mm reels for films, that's a certainty.

They did have the facilities - in 1995 and 1996 Grampian and Border networked weekend afternoons to each other, from 1.10 to 4.45, at the time Border produced all Grampians promos and presentation stuff, used to be back to back Airwolf, Robocop, Cartoons and The A Team on a Saturday, with a half hour programme followed by a film on a Sunday. They also did some late night movies as well.
