My guess is that the identify came with lettering in place and an area the broadcasters could put their logo if they desired. Border didn't feel the need and/or didn't/wouldn't pay to have theirs added.

The problem with that is that the lettering is well-centred, and large, on-screen.

Besides, if the package came as you describe, it would have been trivial for Tyne Tees to have put their new logo on the generic ident when they changed their local one.

Perhaps Border only agreed to the use of the ident late in the day? At which point it was going to be difficult to sort out the logo? After all, as an independent company which, by that point had finally built up quite a strong local identity of their own, they may have been reluctant.

Incidentally, those idents came in in 1999. Had Border abandoned IVC by then? If not, what was the backdrop like?

I do believe Border ICA was gone by late 1999, or when this come in.

Nice TT promo form the early 1990s

Tyne Tees People is one of my favourite promos ever.

"We are the north" is another fab one. I love the unique pronunciation of "people" in "old person Geordie" where you can hear the silent o. Smile

Apparently I uploaded this to YouTube years ago.

The "Great North" series of promos were actually broadcast in April/May 1992, after the franchise round had been decided.

Given that these came out less than two months before Tyne Tees management handed over the keys to YTV, one has to wonder if they were intended as a last hurrah, to remind people of what they were about to lose.

Tyne Tees weren't overly inclined to produce promos like this up to the 1990s (unlike a number of other ITV stations who put them out pretty much continuously), but did make a few of them in the 90s. The ones that never seem to have made it onto the internet were those produced in late 1992; these had the DJ Tommy Vance saying things like "Drama (or sport/news etc): One more reason more people turn to Tyne Tees" over Dance of the Knights by Prokofiev (aka the Apprentice theme). These were much more slick than what went before, and lead to a similar run of promos advertising live footbal matches.

Lesley Manners of all people added to these later with a further run; her young, very feminine voice was hardly suited to the style and couldn't be more different from Vance's booming delivery!

Tyne Tees was always one of the best ITV regions as it connected very well with its viewers and these promos would be typical for Tyne Tees who seemed to care about its roots. ( I do recall a comment made to Lew Grade about his lack of commitment to the Midlands, " You care more about Birmingham, Alabama, than Birmingham, England".)
For the network Tyne Tees always produced an interesting variety of shows: the Catherine Cookson dramas still do decent business on Yesterday, their kids shows like Supergran were as good as anything a major could make, and they had a fine stable of music shows produced for Channel 4. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, did they produce a special featuring Kate Bush for the network in 1980?

Border IVC was still going as late as May 1999 but had gone by the time the new idents came in. Even then it was very sporadic - weekend evenings I think. Weren't they already taking some announcements from Leeds by then anyway? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Leeds had transmission of Border long before the acquisition by Granada, presumably as a continuation of the relationship with Granada Manchester since the early 90s.

Nice behind-the-scenes shot of the in-vision studio and all it's clutter at 1:15!

It was around 1999 when they were acquired by Granada. Also towards the end of regionalism Border seemed to go off on an odd tangent, they started showing forties cartoons and fifties B movies on Sunday afternoons.

Granada never brought border until 2001 , in 2000 Border was brought by Capital radio who only wanted the radio operations. Dare say there liked getting free idents Wink

Well 2001 is ;around 1999' isn't it? Laughing I believe when Capital Radio acquired Border the intention was always to sell the television side to Granada.

True, but the reason I wished to highlight, was to point out it happened after the new "Hearts" idents come into operations.

Border was also heavily involved with CFM Radio, which was Cumbria's first ILR station. In the early days this was a very good radio station, playing the sort of music the BBC ignored such as seventies and eighties hits, heavy metal at night and also having some very good specialist shows such as the Reverend Mike, an irreverent phone in that had a massive following. Border, for all it was a bit parochial and starchy, really did care about its region and CFM was like a radio extension of this.
