I wouldn't say LWT was bad, it just wasn't as good as Thames and it was always beaten by the BBC on Saturday nights in the seventies. However, World of Sport was always good and for my sins I always found On The Buses amusing.

Presume you've been cured of liking On the Buses by about five minutes of watching the repeats on ITV4.
Anyway, was it just LWT's fault about Saturday nights? There were three other Big Five companies that produced programmes at the weekend as well as LWT. And World of Sport was always a bit crap compared with Grandstand, wasn't it? The Big Ticket live sporting Saturday afternoon stuff was on the BBC, Grand National, Boat Race etc.
World in Sport had the crap wrestling and the ITV7 (or fewer) random horse racing meets.

Micheal Grade man at LWT for spell did say one on the Story of ITV, you should have seen the crap coming down the table for the weekends. He made a decent job of making weekend have decent content, Yorkshire, granada, central did not really care for the weekends

It was with the HELP of TVS from 1985 onwards that LWT had a stronger line up. TVS wanted a piece of the action and LWT badly needing new programmes so it did a deal with them to start filling up slots...so

after Blockbusters and A -Team it was all TVS or LWT shows on..

Its claimed that the CPT-TV bid for London was £45million, is there any truth in that?

Something I only realised about Border the other day - not only did the take the EMP 1989 design lock stock and barrel, they actually went as far as to use the italic text in that ident going forward in their own logo, going as far as to use it alone in the next EMP idents!

Was there no proper presentation budget at Border? It seems that they were glad of the 'gift' of network idents (which I guess were effectively free)!

CPV-TV? If so a quick bit of googling reveals that someone (who knows why) made a FOI request to Ofcom about it and this was the response:

I thought all the bid amounts were released, or was it just that it was only known if the company themselves revealed it?

Not only that but several of the idents in between used a custom version of the 1989 ITV music.

Thank you very much for that, I wonder if we " the people" Could send in request to get more information about the 1991 Franchises and also to found out why CPT-TV failed in London but not in other two areas, or why Carlton pass the quality threshold Or any of the other compaines etc?

Did anyone else bid for National Breakfast, Grampian, Scottish, Northern Ireland and Teletext in 1992? And do we know why Ofcomnis allowing ITV Plc, UTV and STV to renew their licences rather than putting them up for tender?

All information about who bidded can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_ITV Wink Scottish had no bids and only paid £2000 a year or a fiver a day along with central,

I believe we do know why there were allowed to be renewed in 2004, but I cant found the information, hopeful some else can.

Here is a clip from ed 23rd March 1988 from Thames: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIeXzMs-k6E&

Clip has promo for NEW ITN news at one, At the end of the has STV, Votes for woman, which later become Scottish woman in 1989, lasting for about 10 years. I wonder why STV repeated this in the afternoon, it would have been better slotting in more CP or Sons and daughters!

Many thanks for posting that clip. I've never seen that News at One promo before, and once more it confirms that News at One returned in March 1988, something which I've been trying to get TV Ark to sort out. They have the 'new look' NAO following straight on from Leonard Parkin's era, followed by the News at 12:30, which is totally wrong.

Interesting to see Julia Somerville sat at that particular computer; I remember seeing some behind the scenes footage on NewsFilm Online which showed Leonard Parkin sitting there in 1987. Clearly that was the News at One desk in the Wells Street newsroom.

So the News at 12.30 didn't last very long then?

It certainly didn't. July 1987 until March 1988, it seems. Although, it did return in January 1991 at the start of the Gulf War.

Anyone can send a Freedom of Information request to a public body. There are many exemptions which allow them to prevent disclosure of the information you're requesting, but it seems in this case it's passed all the tests. Might be worth a try?

Yeah, presumably the idea of moving it to 12.30 was to avoid a clash with the One O'Clock News which had just started (of course, News After Noon was at 12.30 in the winter and one in the summer but now it was at one all the time), but then seemingly they decided 12.30 was inconvenient so they decided to go back to one o'clock, even though as mentioned in the One Day In The Life Of Television book it was then beaten two to one by the Beeb. The move back in 1991 was so it could be extended to an hour but they never moved it back after the war, although it got progressively shorter.

I don't know why they don't do the news at 12.30 now because the problem at 1.30, as at 6.30, is that because it's on after the Beeb it always seems out of date. And starting something at one would lure people over from BBC1 who didn't want to watch the news.

I do remember from 6th September 1993, Lunchtime news ( I'm sure this is reason why it was renamed to Lunchtime news) started at 12.25, with This morning finishing at 12.10, then a good bit of adverts promos with 12.15 regional news. STV/GTV slotted in Telafies? at 12.20 instead as well. It was like that for years. I think news was then moved to 12.30 (with this morning finshing at 12.20 for the regional news)but still finished as you say at 12.55, until 2002 when Des and mel come along. I do agree with you that itv news should be back at 12.30

I have to ask did London have a 30mins Lunchtime bulletin ?
