Yet the only broadcaster to show the Obama and Cameron press conference live. Sky's coverage has been superior to that of ITV and BBC tonight.

You would say that of course Wink

The liveness or not of Obama's statement is irrelevant really, it will be repeated many times in the next few hours so how it was done originally doesn't matter

That's why I think the BBC crashing straight into the news conference with the South African president was a mistake. A news report should really be introduced by a news reader - even if it was something as brief as "Nelson Mandela has died aged 95 - we now join President Zuma".

I suppose 'We interrupt Mrs Brown's boys - to join the BBC News channel, for an important announcement' would have been a bit better.

Newsnight are still going, though the EPG claims Question Time has started.

Here's the moment BBC One opted out of Mrs Brown's boys for those asking:

Thanks for that. Very poor indeed.

Really poorly worded script on behalf of the continuity announcer.

If they couldn't have crossed to the studio before, the announcer should've said: "We interrupt this programme to go live to South Africa's President Zuma for an important announcement" in a somber tone. Not as if she was introducing Loose Women.

That BBC One handover was odd and a bit bad at the same time.

Ironic that they left Mrs Brown during the famous 'tin tray' scene that was a feature of the Christmas promos last year, that will become one of those famous clips, and secondly the announcement into the coverage was a) too upbeat, almost as if it was scheduled and b) strange for mentioning President Zuma by name where at that point even the most well read would have wondered who that was for a moment.

"This is BBC One where we interupt this programme to join the BBC News Channel" would have been better.

But wouldn't it have meant the news channel/World having to come away from live announcement? Or is it possible to split for BBC One? Some effort with only a couple of mins notice.

Newsnight have locked the channel director up by the looks of things. Do many really want to wait this late just for QT?

I expect BBC One's aim was to get over to the BBC News Channel ASAP rather than keep presentation fans happy.

I don't think it has been mentioned yet, but a cat walked past while David Cameron was speaking earlier.

I wouldn't go that far, it wasn't ideal but in the circumstances the only thing wrong with it was the wording of the announcement, presumably the urgency to get on air once the death was announced meant that it had to be rushed. Just adding 'of South Africa' at the end would have saved it

I thought earlier on that Newsnight might he extended, like it was following the death of Margaret Thatcher, but when they announced a new schedule I assumed this wouldn't happen. They're now even introducing new guests.

I think someone needs to turn the lights off in Studio B, otherwise Newsnight will never end...

I'm struggling to see why Newsnight at this stage needs to be competing with the rolling news coverage on BBC One/BBC News.

Newsnight aren't for letting go, are they? They just reached their new off air time of 2345 and brought on another three guests. Can't they save it for tomorrow? I'd imagine it'll still be their top story then too.
