Since we're also discussing schedule changes on the non news channels, it might be better off remaining here.
Surely this thread should be moved to the Newsroom?

So I shouldn't watch the local news for some news that is local to me? No wonder people are disagreeing with you.
No, that's not what I'm saying.
At any other time, I would be calling for the appropriate BBC1 regions to do expanded coverage. But tonight is a different night, with a vastly more important story. BBC local radio should always be the first place you turn to when it comes to flooding locally, that would be the sensible thing to do, especially if you are that interested or possibly directly affected.
Remember, BBC1 is not a regional channel, but a national channel with regional opt-outs. A big international story will always dominate a big regional or local story on BBC1. Asking BBC1 to do anything else other than stay with the Mandela story, except for the scheduled regional news update maybe moved, as it was in this case, would be in my editorial judgement silly.
However, BBC local radio, who's priority is the local audience, should be rolling with flood coverage, if that is the important story. It is a question of News Priorities, and on BBC1, international will always outweigh regional.
For the flooding, BBC local radio should be your first port of call, not BBC1. Yes, I would expect them to cover it, but I would point out that you shouldn't be relying on a national TV channel to get your local news.

Not the "weather for ducks" one again? Bring back Powergen - if Powergen still exists. It all went downhill from Sheila's Wheels - it's amazing really how nobody seems to consider that the weather sponsorship will always lead out of the news, and often the news isn't that jolly.
It was a cheery woman on a bike heading up north IIRC. STV had it's usual "I love this weather, don't you Bill?" sting, which was also used on STV News at Six - again, very inappropriate, especially today.
After ITV News there, it shows how inappropriate the ITV Weather sponsor sting is at times.

Yet the only broadcaster to show the Obama and Cameron press conference live. Sky's coverage has been superior to that of ITV and BBC tonight.

To be honest it went uphill after Sheila's wheels, as that was particularly jarring, the current ones are nowhere near as bad.

Absolutely correct that BBC One took local news tonight given the wind/flooding problems particularly in the East. Very big story for people of Lincolnshire. Radio Humberside and Lincolnshire have been excellent all day and evening but still important to recognise it on tv. As big as the Mandela news is, right here right now for the regions affected the coastal flooding is bigger. Perhaps there could have been a selective regional opt for the eastern regions.

I agree, he was excellent tonight...though think at times he sounded a little emotional. The South African link might explain why.
Saw a bit of the big three News programmes (at 10).All excellent from what I saw...though of course a lot of this is already planned years before.
ITV News may have made a mistake for not breaking into coverage of Im a Celebrity but Mark Austin has been masterful at the helm tonight and hope to see him and Jeremy Thompson two former South African correspondents live from South Africa tomorrow.
