Personally after watching on and off for about 18 years, I would find it hard to adjust to Neighbours being on ITV and I agree with previous posters that the BBC would be silly to lose it. Its a landmark of daytime TV in my opinion.
People shouldn't be so damn nostalgic about it - it's lost it's way in the last couple of years and the BBC should have had the guts to pull it without this situation.
Then again, EastEnders should have been axed four years ago too!
I expect the likely outcome is the 5.35pm edition will be axed and just the lunchtime edition will air for now.

That's a complete nonsense. It is one of the most successful programmes on British television and this has just been affirmed by the interest from competitors for the rights. That's not to forget a 40% share that the show commands daily at lunchtime. Therefore, to suggest that it should be axed when a few staples of the schedule are what pin it all together is sheer daft and the BBC One schedule would be a much more lack-lustre state for its loss.
Overall, I'm hoping this BBC statement today is to prove they're serious about removing their bid and to move Freemantle towards making a decision. More than likely, Freemantle knows the BBC is the best place to secure the future success of the show but that an open bidding process has nicely bid up the price they can charge the BBC from £25k to this inflated £70k+. Hopefully, sense will prevail rather than a bit extra to report in this year's Freemantle profits.

Brekkie you would be the first to complain if someone said that about Hollyoaks.
As for Eastenders well I hate that as much as you do but it still pulls in enough viewers so they wont axe it.

Have to agree. Neighbours is one of the biggest ratings pullers of the weekday daytime schedule. Hence ITV & Five want it as they can charge more to advertisers in this slot. For a soap to command a regular daily 3m viewers i can't believe anyone can say it should be scrapped! It doesn't make sense. 3m viewers is a lot for daytime when most are out at work.

EastEnders and Neighbours are not in the same league.
The beauty of Neighbours has always been that its light drama you can tune in on and off and just be drawn in by the storyline as opposed to the characters.
EastEnders heavily relies on its continuity, characters
and
storylines - which together which are total crap now anyway.
So I'm definately with your arguement about EastEnders but not Neighbours.
