For goodness sake. ITV won't kill Neighbours, they aren't that stupid. If they are paying an ungodly amount per episode they will give it a fixed slot in which it will perform as well as it did on BBC1.

But will it though? As well as what they pay for the programme itself, the BBC subsidises Neighbours quite heavily and it may well have ended years ago without their input. If ITV are paying ridiculous amounts just for each episode, do you honestly think they will have anything left over to spend on the show itself?

I think you slightly misunderstand how buying tv programmes works. If ITV are paying £100k/episode, then Fremantle makes more money (thus, theoretically more money available for the Neighbours production team). If the BBC were offering £70k/episode, they wouldn't then be giving money on top to "spend on the show". So even if Fremantle just pockets the cash, ITV's £100k/episode offer is still a bigger investment than the BBC's £70k/episode offer.

No, but an extra £375,000 a week might. (Going on the basis that the BBC pays £25,000/episode now, and ITV are potentially offering £100,000/episode). I'm not saying I support a move from the BBC, personally I feel Fremantle are being a bit greedy, but it's a free market. And even £50,000/week extra is the equivilent to 2 current BBC episodes, so it is substantially increased investment.

You dont know that will be the case. They cant make people watch it. Look how many viewers Home and Away lost when it moved. I know less people have access to Five but it was still a huge drop in viewers.

Yes, plus it was off the air for a year. If there was a similar gap in transmission then we'd probably see a drop in viewers but I don't see any other reason why people would find it difficult to watch it on ITV.

They are still taking a risk assuming people will follow the show to ITV1. How many people watch the show out of habit after CBBC?

A few I'm sure, but CBBC doesn't attract 2.5 million viewers so a large bulk of the audience are people who weren't watching CBBC previously.

CBBC bearly gets 2.5 hundred thousand thesedays, so it is a case of people tuning in specially to watch Neighbours rather than any inheritence from the previous programme

Still doesnt gurantee that they will all tune in to watch it on ITV though.

I used to love Neighbours in the late 1980s in the days Kylie and Jason were in it, but now its not anywhere near as good. The show IMO has had its day.

I watch them both but I prefer Home and Away and hardly miss an episode. It is far better and we know the reason why it doesnt do as well here is because its on a smaller channel. Also its one of Five's most watched programmes.

I want it to stay with the BBC becouse I hate ad-breaks. I prefere going through a show without breaks. If ITV of five get it there will be breaks. It fine where it is.

I think ITV are just trying to flog a dead horse right now. I do like the suggestion of showing shortland street in that time slot:

And that comment makes absolutely no sense.

Neighbours is not "a dead horse", no matter of what you might think of it personally. It has a viewership of over 5m a day, it get's a 40% share of the audience at lunchtime, it is the most popular daytime television programme (outside the news).

As for the suggestion of Shortland Street, that is laughable, it has no following here, it's been off air for many years, why would that do the business for ITV but the already established Neighbours wouldn't ?

Isn't it time for a little bit of objectivity on this debate rather than sweeping statements that are based purely on conjecture ?

It was popular in the regions who showed it, especially Central and HTV regions who showed it for years. If it had been networked who knows, it might have been very popular over here.

I lost interest in it when I they took it off air, however if it came back id probabaly watch it.

Being awash with cash can often result in creative bankruptcy. I just fear that we'll see more plane crashes, bombings and shootings as Ten pulls every stunt it can to get the show back near the top of the ratings.
