To be honest I think Neighbours is quite crap - lets be honest it doesnt come close to the British Soaps does it. I think Crossroads is going to be a lot better than Neighbours in 2003!

You can't compare neigbours to a brittish soap, they are quite clearly different.

All im saying is the british soaps and Shortland St are clearly better than the aussie ones.

Well my DVD arrived at the beginning of Christmas week and I'm delighted with it! The only shame is that none of the finales (except 1994) are on it, or any of the other key episodes besides hatches, matches and dispatches. Perhaps next time though if they release another one. From a presentation point of view, the menu is an interesting take on the 1992-1994 end credits design. The background is simply a capture. Very effective though and having the full versions of the theme tunes over the credits is also a bonus.

As for the claim that Neighbours is crap, that's a bit close minded I'd have thought. I don't watch H&A or Hollyoaks as I don't particularly like them, but I seeing as some 2-3m viewers tune into them each week, they must be doing something right and so I wouldn't think that they're 'crap.' Neighbours gets 6-7m viewers daily so what does that say?

I can see where you're coming from that Neighbours is sometimes a little too squeaky-clean, with the BBC helping the cause by omitting phrases like when Lou was in hospital and told someone they were talking a load of 'bollocks'. It's when Grange Hill some thirty minutes earlier and in CBBC too gets away with more that I fail to understand their method of thought.

As for there not being any Aboriginal characters, would that not have more to do with it's very suburbian Melbourne setting. I know another Network Ten soap Breakers did have Aboriginal characters, but then it was set on Bondi Beach in Sydney which itself has a more diverse ethnic mix. Besides, I'm quite fond of the show's innocence in such issues. The recent story where Valda mistook Harold for being the 'Rock Hudson' type was hilarious and I wouldn't have thought anyone would be offended by how they merrily danced around actually saying she thought he was gay. In this day and age when society has gone PC mad, is it not refreshing that Neighbours, often considered 22mins of pure escapism can be just that, somewhere that you can turn off entirely to all the madness in the world and just chill with these simple, cheesy scenarios that appear onscreen. I like knowing that what I'm watching is solely to entertain, not to subtly reflect some social issue or the like. If anything, that's where Brookie perhaps went wrong, by being too issue based that once they were all exhausted, it ran out of ideas!

Surely something *much* more exciting than that? Concerning a certain brown haired British lass? Wink

What a pathetic end to a pathetic season and a pathetic storyline ie Susan's accident!

SS has had much better season finale's

1995 - a truck crashes into the clinic's reception killing one character and injuring several

1997 - a plane crash, a nurse sent to jail for the mercy killing of their friend, two character finding out that they are not only lovers but half brother and Sister

1998 - Minnie finding oscars body, Ellen/Mike in the water with no life jackets

2000 - Eamon hanging over the edge of a cliff after Kate takes revenge for him raping her, Frank badly beaten up by a bunch of thugs, Dr Chris Warner returning,

2001 - an explosion and Rachel is kidnapped by her boyfriend/fiancee

2002 - Rachel involved in a car crash, one of the doctors stabbed or shot or something - dont know full details but one of these two will be fatal when the show returns in 2003.

*Cough* Neighbours has had many many affairs storylines! Why, the one that saved Neighbours from being cancelled altogether in 1998 was Karl's "non-affair" with Sarah Beaumont -- nothing happened apart from a few stolen kisses, but the epsiode where Susan found out got very high ratings in Australia -- and even got a trail here in the UK! The only other trail I remember in recent years was when it looked like Libby might've died in the 2001 finale. There have been many proper affairs though.

And Neighbours has had a siege -- there was a siege in Ramsay St and Cody Willis got shot and died. Pam came back to be by her bedside.

Nearly 12m tuned in to see Susan slap Karl in 1998, getting Neighbours into the top 20 in the UK that year. I can remember being in the newly opened Argos Superstore as it was then in Belfast where a huge crowd had gathered around the wall of televisions to watch the lunchtime episode. Someone turned the volume up when we got to that scene in particular and when she actually slapped him, one woman yelled 'yes!' at the top of her voice. The atmosphere was terriffic, more so than achieved by other soaps shen they clearly leap right in with their affairs and bed hopping antics. At least Neighbours thanks to it's innocence factor can still wow viewers with such little acts of unfaithfulness.

That was actually meant to happen in the Season Finale, but it didn't! It's probably going to happen in the return episode.

This year's Finale was pretty rubbish IMHO. There was no action or anything. Just

Karl and Susan renewing their vows and Lyn revealing that she's pregnant. There was no action or anything exciting in it.

It would have been a whole lot better if Sarah had re-appeared in the Finale, as planned.

I don't know why she didn't. It was in Australian TV and Soap Magazines, Episode Summeries and everything before the show, just not in the show! Confused:

Even the neighbours fans admit the finale is going to be rubbish - if Shortland Street had been given a networked slot and therefore was really popular fans would have been on the edge of ther deckchairs this summer when Kate and Eamon were on that cliff in the 2000 finale!

God, Jez will you stop going on about how crap you think Neighbours is and how good you think Shortland Street is? Different people like different things, we don't all think Neighbours is rubbish and SS is the best thing since sliced bread. From what I've seen of SS, it's not as good as you make it sound. IMO Neighbours is better. I have my view, and you have yours. Jez, stop trying to force your views on everyone else.

Neighbours fans in the UK can expect some more action soon, which actually has

Stuart in a van balencing over the edge of a cliff!

So, just because the Finale doesn't have much action in, doesn't mean we can't expect any the rest of the time!

Exactly. There is a Shortland Street thread on here, started by you, so go and chat in there if you like the show so much.
