Add another 0 to that petition and it still wouldn't make it commercially viable.

Adding two 0s to it probably wouldn't.

'It is a huge part of British culture'

Is it though in 2017? It's definitely not spoken of as watercooler nowadays.

Exactly. It is largely a nostalgic part of our culture remembered by those who grew up in the 80s and 90s.

Isn't it like Woolworths, BHS and Top Of The Pops? Everyone had strong nostalgic memories for them, but nobody cared towards the end, and only started the outcry once they realised they were moribund. You can't keep a failing business running, or a TV show nobody watches on air because of "nostalgia".

I wonder if the viewing numbers would have been this low if it has stayed on BBC One? Even since it moved to Five its seems to have gone down hill. We also have to remember what could Ch5 put in the slot? If you move H&W then what gets the 6pm slots etc. If the replacement is worse and get less viewers then its better to have this soap.

Surely that depends, if it's a cheap import, or a game show or something that costs less to make. As I've said I think one of the issues with Neighbours is the viewing figures it get don't justify what Fremantle/Ten are asking for it, and as the UK is pretty much the main outlet for the show (I think someone earlier in this thread said it gets around 150,000 viewers in Oz, so won't be pulling in much money there), they're as good as paying for it.

I guess on the viewing figures it got on the BBC, that amount was seen as woth paying, but now they're much lower, it probably isn't now. If what they're being asked to pay is more than they'll pull in from advertising and sponsorship, then Five will be losing money- what they put in its place might get fewer viewers, but if it costs less then they'll make more from it. And that's the bottom line.

Didn't 5 pay £300m for the show originally, given the decline in ratings, I imagine Viacom wants to pay a lot less for the show which likely is the sticking point for Fremantlemedia.

This is just like Sky and Discovery all over again.

I'm sure they'll come to some sort of agreement (assuming no other broadcaster wants it), where one side will end up giving in.

Fremantlemedia will probably end up accepting a lower amount (as they've got probably more to lose), rather than Viacom offering more, assuming that the programme is still financially viable at that amount.
