Why don't they remake the Neighbours credits themselves?
Or as I understand the BBC's version is shorter than the Aussie version, can't they just get Grundy to make the BBC's credits so that they go up the right side of the screen, so that the BBC can just add on the ECP to the left, like they do with Eastenders, etc.?

The Beeb and Neighbours have both known for some while that ECPs are in use on the credits and yet someone, somewhere still isn't making the sensible suggestion of the credit sequence being made ECP-safe permanently. I'm hoping for a change for the new season but after seeing the credits are exactly the same (and the poor opening titles Sad ), I doubt it.

Sorry, but the question is totally irrelevant to the topic but how far behind is the Neighbours in the UK to Neighbours in Aussie. Just asking before here in NZ we have caught up alot over the chritmas break.

Exactly. Whether we like it or not, ECPs are here to stay. So has the BBC considered other ways of generating ECPs, perhaps actually producing a ECP-friendly split-screen end-credits sequence (popular overseas, notably America and Australia) and having these burned onto the playout tapes.

i dont think they're exactly burned into the play out. They are put in as a 'special segment' sort of like scheduling a promo. The show would fade out then the ECP would fade in instead of the original credits which have been removed.

When the BBC air the season return on the 11th March the UK will be around 8 weeks behind. New Zealand are 1 week behind.

So we still have the Christmas episodes to come at the end of Feb. Very Happy

Burning them onto transmission copies of tapes is a very inefficient way of doing things. It means the metadata accompanying the programme and the programme itself can only be used once and must be re-created next time it goes out. Plus if you put a programme on air and then the ECP becomes irrelevant (schedule change etc) or you just want to drop it for editorial reasons, it becomes very difficult. Plus in the case of the BBC, if a Nation wants a clean copy then you'd have to send out a tape, which is fine the odd time, but not something you'd want to be doing all the time - costs would be prohibitive. Plus you'd double the costs of reviewing the transmission copies...

Indeed - this is exactly the problem I remember ITV having back in the 'hearts era' with the smokey neon bar credits down the right hand side of the screen.
(Although these credits were my favourites).

For shows that were live, the credits were obviously played 'live' too, if you know what I mean, and thus the credits only actually 'existed' with the left-hand promotion intact.
An example - the end credits to Trisha in 2001 would always play out while Richard and Judy appeared in the left-hand window talking about what was coming next on This Morning. This was back of course when Trisha went out live every morning, and thus these archived Trisha shows will feature Richard and Judy talking on the left-hand side of the credits screen. I remember seeing these Trisha episodes repeated through the night, and they would simply fade out at the end without showing any credits (Just a small Granada copyright notice in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen).
Actually, the same goes for This Morning itself during this era - John Suchet would appear on the left with info on the lunchtime news - then when This Morning was repeated in the afternoon on ITV2, they used to simply fade right out without any kind of 'end' to the show except for R & J literally saying 'goodbye'.

Another perfect example of the aloofness of broadcasters.

More shocking was the cock-up in the trail before Neighbours this lunchtime; Phil made his announcement over the Next slide, then it popped up again over the trail which followed. Why on earth would a lunchtime announcement on a main channel not be live?

It's pretty annoying the way the ECPs now always jolt the credits when they come on and off, I assume this is since the move to the new playout centre. Can't something be done - it looks really naff in this day and age!

It's always been like that.

Really!? I hadn't noticed that before. I'm sure it seems more pronounced or something.. maybe I'm wrong... Wink

Blimey - I mustn't watched Neighbours for ages! I remember when the BBC was 18 months behind Oz...
