I think the absolute earliest it might be pulled, or at least rescheduled, would be the end of June when it takes it's break for Wimbledon.

However, I think the most likely scenario is they'll air it till Christmas and then ditch it - I think the BBC would be being more than fair keeping it on air till then.

Maybe they wont take a break for Wimbledon this year so that they can screen all the remaining episodes they have the rights to as soon as possible. Afterall the main reason they take a break for Wimbledom is to avoid getting to close to the Oz episodes. They used to reschedule it in a 12.30pm slot IIRC when Wimbledom was on, and its only been since about 2000 they have taken breaks.

Anyone know if Five actually paid on an episode basis or a rights basis? I believe the BBC has a rights licence which means it can show any episode in the Neighbours archieve? I presume 5 will have the same deal? to show any episode in the Neighbours archive? Just not sure how it all works. I can't see the BBC pulling the show early, mainly because it would be deemed a waste of license payers money to not show something which has been paid for surely?

Archive episodes may only begin with the ones they're showing, as Five Life are beginning a repeat run of Home and Away this week from where Five picked it up.

Jez - I don't think it'll be in the BBC's advantage to rush the episodes - the opposite in fact, delaying the screening of episodes for any excuse to force Five to begin screening them later than they'd like - or without certain episodes.

As for the licence fee argument - well, if Five are paying three times the price maybe the best the BBC could do for the licence fee is pull them immediately and then sell them on to Five at a profit!

Neighbours will probably leave the BBC just before Euro 2008 football coverage begins. Isn't that in June? And depending whether the BBC have rights to the football which I think they don't.

Also, I've heard this song before, but for those who haven't...

But if they rush through the episodes they would obviously finish quicker, which could mean a gap in time between the last BBC episode and when Five pick up showing it. As other people have said, they wouldnt want the situation where BBC1 showed the final episode on the Friday, with Five showing the next episode the following Monday.

As for repeating earlier episodes, I guess Five will have the rights to all episodes from when they take over showing it. The same as what happened with Home and Away which is why they cant repeat episodes any earlier than 2000. I think UKTV Gold have the rights to the earlier episodes?

The BBC were working on a 'Neighbours Week' for BBC3.

I wonder if this will still be shown?

Not sure but it's quite possible Five will get a special episode or two made.

With Home & Away there was a launch programme, along with a weekly update show during the interim period.

Didn't ITV manage to do something sneaky like that when five got hold of Home and Away? ISTR it was off air for some time before five could show it...

ITV's deal with Seven included a clause that if any other broadcaster poached the show, then it couldn't resume transmission on the new network for a year, unless ITV dictated otherwise.

ITV however threw their toys out of the pram and kept it off for the full year, which is why the series still remains a decent way behind Australian episodes.

I am not aware of any such clause existing with the BBC but I think it will be highly unlikely that it will finish on BBC1 on the Friday and resume on Five on the Monday.

Despite what the cynics have said I think that pairing it up with Home & Away has got commercial success written all over it. The trick Five need to play is to use Neighbours to attract some of the "lost" viewers back to Home & Away (which has been the lesser-rated of the two shows in the UK since its own changeover.)

With DSO getting underway around the same time it's also a good oppourtunity to milk any Five Life "benefits" for all they're worth - indeed, Home & Away's the only thing really doing any good on there right now!

With good solid multimedia promotion for the actual Aussie Hour rather than an individual soap, I can see it being very succesful commercially - it's all about playing the "we've got both of the big Aussie soaps now" card.

I think people will follow it over, and it might just bring some people back to Home & Away too. Both Aussie shows have everything to gain from this.

That's certainly true -- H&A is bound to benefit if, for example, Ch5 put Neighbours on at 5.30 with H&A immediately following at at 6pm.

It has to be said that Neighbours going to 5 must be better than going to ITV. With 5 being a relatively low-key channel, they are far less likely to dump the programme at the first sign of trouble.

Not that I watch either programme any more particularly (I dip in and out on the odd occasion but no more). Neighbours' hay-day is over, and 5 is probably as good a place as any.
