Does any of this have any impact on the contract to show Neighbours on RTE.

Who will end up been the sponsor for Neighbours??

I don't think they could reasonably pull it. However, as has been previously suggested, they could move it off BBC One some time before the contract runs out - most probably to BBC Three.

Not good propaganda for the Beeb though. Surely, going to Five from BBC1 and losing viewers would be better than going from BBC3 and gaining viewers on 5.

After 21 years, BBC evicts 'Neighbours' from schedule: Independent.co.uk
Quote:
The news follows the BBC's withdrawal from a bidding war with ITV 1 and Five, during which prices were reported to rise as high as £300m for an eight year run of the series.
Sorry, if this has already been mentioned, but what will happen to Neighbours on Five after the Eight-year run? Cool

Despite the money issue - the real reason for the move - the Neighbours production people in Oz must be a little worried that it will go from (one of - certainly top two!) the most watched terrestrial channels in Britain to the least watched!

Despite the money, and the extra investment etc etc, simply being moved to the least watched terrestrial channel has got to be a worry. And by saying "worry", I mean, they are very grateful and pleased that it's been so popular in the UK, so anything to shift the balance or decrease interest could have knock on effects.

I know a few people have mentioned it, but I don't think the BBC will move Neighbours from BBC1 until they broadcast the last episode - they'll probably get too many complaints!

No, if anything, it will make RTÉ Two's viewing figures for Neighbours increase massively as they will now basically have the exclusive rights to new episodes, what with Five not being available here.

Great news!

I think people will follow it over, and it might just bring some people back to Home & Away too. Both Aussie shows have everything to gain from this.

Remember that not only will promotion and profile be much better but you've got the likely opportunity of First Look and a weekend omnibus on Five Life.

I think the absolute earliest it might be pulled, or at least rescheduled, would be the end of June when it takes it's break for Wimbledon.

However, I think the most likely scenario is they'll air it till Christmas and then ditch it - I think the BBC would be being more than fair keeping it on air till then.

That would be great if they would have an omnibus for Neighbours on Five Life ... but do you think they will do that?

Almost certainly. Home & Away has two omnibus showings - one on Saturdays and one I think late on Sundays.

The Neighbours rights *do* include Five Life - I imagine the deal's very similar to the one they have with Seven for H&A.

I believe the BBC have paid for the episodes up to June 2008. Five have bought after June.

So if the BBC 'ditch it' after Christmas, no one is going to see the six months worth of episodes the BBC has paid for.

I can't see the BBC not showing the episodes they've paid for. This is licence payers' money after all. There would be an uproar. They are public service broadcasters after all.

I think you're wrong.

Plus Peter said it would go off BBC One mid 2008.

Didn't ITV manage to do something sneaky like that when five got hold of Home and Away? ISTR it was off air for some time before five could show it...
