I really think that it's such sad news, but we all knew it would either be ITV or C5 getting Neighbours. It's really sad news - I just can't believe it.
Does anyone know at this stage if C5 will start where BBC One will leave off, or will there a gap, like when C5 got H&A from ITV?
What a sad day for the BBC - It will be strange however watching the show with Adverts which will be really weird!

Quick moan - the new thread opened now the news is confirmed was closed too quickly IMO, especially as this thread doesn't have it's title updated with the latest developments!
Back to the issue at hand - and it's a blow for ITV, Five are probably the biggest losers in this as I just think throwing in Neighbours with Home and Away is just going to devalue the place of Home and Away on the channel, which over recent years as been far superior to it's Ramsey Street counterpart.
It's going to cause some serious scheduling problems for Five, as they'll either have to move their flagship news bulletin, or schedule Neighbours (or Home and Away) against Hollyoaks - which is the only soap in the last year to actually increase it's ratings!
It's also going to screw up their First Chance screenings, whether Neighbours or Home and Away is shown first in the soap hour. Home and Away is about the only thing that's bringing half-decent ratings in on either Five Life or Five US.
IMO it would have suited ITV alot more, screening at 5.30pm with a first look at 6pm on ITV2 - causing minimal disruption to existing schedules.
As for the BBC - well, Neighbours has deserved the axe almost as long as EastEnders, but it will be a difficult slot to fill.
And although questionable considering the use of the licence fee, I do think the show should be pulled from the schedules, at least in the 5.35pm slot, sooner rather than later!

Not necessarily pulled altogether, but I would move it to a "less prominent" timeslot as soon as possible, perhaps even shunting it to BBC Three until the contract expires, to allow for new programming to be developed for the afternoon and early evening timeslots sooner rather than later.

Better Q: is five News at 5.30 great? well viewed?
BO
As it has the contract until next spring i feel the BBC should keep the 5.35 neighbours until the end as the lunchtime viewing doesnt suit everyone who likes the show. However BBC1 could some weeks try out different programmes in the slot to see what is likely to work with viewers.
Shifting it to BBC3 would surely kill neighbours off completely, maybe BBC2 is a better option as it is more mainstream, they could even use the 5.35 slot while new stuff is developed for BBC One.

River City or Weakest Link are pretty high up in the running.
I suspect that they'll use the oppertunity to scrap the 2 neighbours slots completely and do something new, probably moving kids programmes over to BBC2.
I agree - they've been looking for an excuse for ages. It'll probably lose a good chunk of airtime too in the switch!
BBC2's daytime line up though has become pretty tired in the last year or so - both Flog It and Ready Steady Cook are both well past their sell by dates - and arguably The Weakest Link too!
Doctors - I think it might be more suited in a 6pm slot on BBC2 than it would at 5.30pm on BBC1, but that might just be my hatred of Eggheads clouding my judgement!

Hardly surprising news that the BBC have lost Neighbours. This has been on the cards for weeks. I dont think they would benefit from scrapping the 5.35pm showing before the end of the contract though, as some people have suggested.
Im actually pleased it has gone to FIVE. I think they will treat it better than ITV would.
I expect it will go in the 6.30pm slot after Home and Away - or Home and Away will move to 6.30pm with Neighbours at 6pm. Either way I can definately see an aussie soap hour between 6-7pm. And so what if Neighbours or Home and Away is up against Hollyoaks? Do you expect all channels just to show nothing because Hollyoaks is on? lol

Well, they do at the moment!
Hardly. The news on ITV and the regional news on BBC1 are very popular.
Could say the same about Corrie, EE and Home and Away. The other channels show very little when they are on.
Hollyoaks might have seen an increase in viewing figures, but compaired to the other soaps it had very little to start with didnt it.
