The programme is always delivered as 16:9 FHA, so I'd imagine it was probably just a widescreen switching error.
How were you watching it? (DTT? Sky?)
DTT. And it wasn't my box as i switched to 4:3 on that to check and only small fullscreen bars just appeared (if you see what i mean).

Today's episode broadcast in 4:3. Any reason for this?

The building, now Global Studios, was originally Network 10's main studio facility. Prisoner was made there, and when Neighbours 'expanded' (set wise) in the mid-90's, it expanded into the space which was originally used for Prisoner.
The outside of the building was indeed used for the exteriors of Wentworth in Prisoner - and indeed when Prisoner finished the stick on cell Windows were left as a permanent monument to the series (in the early 80's it was Channel 10's flagship soap), and are still there today.
Another interesting tidbit - the dressed up part of the building posing for the front of Wentworth Detention Centre was actually the SIDE of the real building, with camera shots creatively done so that you couldn't see the length of the building (and it's a fairly huge building) in shot.
Might as well chuck this in too - the road at the end of Ramsey Street is called Wentworth Road, in honour of Prisoner (10 bought in Neighbours just as Prisoner was finishing). Don't know when it was last namechecked in the programme though.
I'm not sure why the sponsorship had to be edited out. Granted, the BBC aren't allowed to run advertising or sponsorship, but surely it can only count as such if they had been paid for and have purposely inserted a credit to a corporation. If a sponsorship logo just happens to be in the credits of an imported programme they've bought in, I don't see the problem. The UK is one of the only countries (if not the only one - do Ireland do it) whose broadcasters feel the need to hack the sponsorship logos out of Australian soaps - virtually every other country just leaves them in.
Anyway, the old style (i.e. pre-1994) way the BBC edited the Neighbours credits was to hold the Neighbours caption at the start on screen for longer than happens in the 'real' credits. Then to let the entire sequence play right to the point where the sponsorship logos appear, at which point they'd insert another slide crediting the people who cut the credits down (crediting them to the highly OTT position of 'Television Presentation'), before cutting back to the copyright page (which was held up slightly longer). The music always ran to it's full length and all cast and crew were credited in every episode.
Despite being crudely done with simple cuts and freezes, and inserting an extra caption, it all looked very neat and real.

Correct me if I'm wrong here . . . but wasn't the studio building that had apparently become a health hazard with
asbestos, originally used as the exterior set of the Wentworth Detention Centre in "Prisoner Cell Block H" . . . ?

That leaves them with two options - either hold on the copyright caption for a bit longer or edit the music right at the end to sound more like the BBC cut.

I'm not sure I can agree with this last bit, although I had no idea what was going on when I was that age, there was something about that "Television Presentation" slide that stuck out like a sore thumb!!
Incidentally do UK Gold show the closers exactly how the BBC did? I don't even know if Neighbours is still on UK Gold, they moved it from a watchable timeslot years ago.

What a fantastic arrangement of the theme!!
Hard to feel really sorry for Todd though as I never liked him. Annoying little brat.
They usually play that slow piano version of the theme with a montage of images of the character with the end credits when
a major character dies. IIRC, the last character that had the special tribute credits sequence was Madge Bishop, when she
died of cancer about four years. Before that, it was Helen Daniels that was given the same special tribute.
Speaking of Todd Landers, yes he was annoying sometimes, but of course most of the teenage characters in Neighbours
have been. haven't they? Whatever happened to the actor who played Todd (Kristian Schmid) anyway? The last time he
was seen on TV screens here (IIRC) was as a co-presenter of Going Live. He had trouble trying to get a work permit,
so the BBC couldn't pay him for his appearances. Or something like that! Didn't he also appear in a (not very good)
remake of the 70's sci-fi drama "The Tomorrow People" shown on Children's ITV, sometime around 1993?

The Tomorrow People classic.
The BBC are airing Neighbours this year over Christmas due to Network Ten's break being only 3 weeks (and maybe because they lost the rights to World's Strongest Man, which always aired at 5.35 over Christmas), so it's only off for 2 days, Boxing day and New Years Holiday Monday.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but Shane is the real life ex-husband of Janelle (aka Nell Feeney-Connor). I bet it caused a bit of an argument when Nell took the Neighbours part!
