H&A lost Alex, Kit, Seb, Jade, Noah, Rhys, Max and Dani, and gained Kane, Robbie, Matilda, Henry, Josie and Dan.
To be fair, the 2004 season saw the focus of the show shift from the Sutherlands to the Hunters, but they did it gradually (by having Rhys get together with Beth, then leaving her, then the Suthos kids buggering off) which to be fair was better than a big bang.
Infact with the exception of Alex (went off with Brodie) Seb (paralysed, went to live with Fisher) and Noah (shot dead) the rest of the exits were the Suthos leaving.
H&A also brings back a lot of oldies often: Shelley, Floss, Dylan, Angie, Duncan, Lance, Brodie, Fisher, Jade and Morag have all returned as guests this year.
I don't think Neighbours has been helped by what's been a very strong start to Home & Away's 2005 season.

Although to be fair, the 2005 season starts here from Friday and with thank hank thanks to Erinsborough.com, I was able to preview a few of the episodes and they are looking good. Bizarrely, Paul Robinson manages to get a job as a teacher at Erinsborough. This will double the amount of teachers to two along with Mrs Kennedy. lol
EDIT: The continuity announcer on BBC1 linking out of the end of the 1:45 showing of Neighbours told us that there will be a old Ramsay Street member coming back next week. Someone should have told him that this person actually appears right at the end of tomorrow's show

I thought he appeared in the finale? (which was supposed to be today?)

Your right, he does appear in the finale but that good epsiode is tomorrow. It's only a fleeting glimpse of him though but you will see a lot more of him over the next few weeks.
Today's episode concentrated on Karl and Izzy's wedding and like anything on a soap, it doesn't go to plan as it should do.

Looks like continuity wheeled out the exactly same announcement about an old regular appear in the 5:35 repeat. Despite seeing this episode in question 3 months ago, it will be good to see it on a proper telly instead of a small window on a PC monitor. The scenes are really good tomorrow featuring the fire. The only downside in Neighbours is the predictable respones. One example tomorrow has Harold in the pub saying "Can you smell burning" and then if by magic, a split second later, the fire alarm goes off!

Yes, it's going to be a cracker of an episode. I first saw it when I went back home to Australia for Christmas.
I'm dreading the ending though. One of the biggest episodes in Neighbours 20 year run is bound to be ruined by an ECP for "Comic Relief Does Fame Acadamy"
