Craig Ferguson is brilliant. His show seems small though. It's a tiny studio with a wee audience. I think it would lose something if you give him a room with 300 people obnoxiously hooting.
How many more people does his bigger studio hold now?
Of course he's mainstream enough, and also it must be doing well if CBS flew Craig back to Scotland an episode of the show...
I think it was a week of shows he did in Scotland? Anyway, that has nothing to do with whether his appeal is mainstream enough to takeover the higher profile Late Show slot.
Those specials had Alex Salmond, being interviewed, despite US TV's interest in a couple of our higher profile politicians of late, I can't imagine Salmond would be someone featured in a mainstream show, this underlines the fact Ferguson probably doesn't have a mainstream enough following.
The interesting issue in all this, with The Tonight Show coming from 30 Rock is presumably the 12.35 show will now switch to the West Coast? Not seen that mentioned yet
Well, that being said I think you may have misjudged the curiosity in having an ex-Scot interview the First Minister of Scotland. I don't think it has anything to do with the cache of having the UK Prime Minister, as they did, on Letterman.

The Scot interviewing the Scot was quite amusing.
Well I'm judging what mainstream American TV producers/viewers would want. I may well be misjudging it.
I still stand by the belief that they'd go for someone a bit more mainstream for the Letterman slot. It could be years off anyway, so it might be someone who isn't even on the scene yet.

The old studio only held just over the 100 mark but his new studio holds more than 300
Being a bit of a studio nerd, it was quite interesting reading into Ferguson's old and new studios when the changeover happened. The old CBS Television City studio (Studio 58 ) that Ferguson was in was tiny and only housed the Late Late Show because it used to be hosted by Tom Snyder, who never had an audience. Even with just Snyder, it was quite small. So for Ferguson and an audience, it was tiny.
I could actually imagine Ferguson leaving late night altogether. One would hope that he would be the natural choice for replacing Letterman, but as we saw with Leno and Letterman on NBC, having the show after the main late night show is sometimes not enough, even If it is good and popular.
But, when CBS renewd with Letterman for Late Night for another two years last year, part of the deal was the production (via his Worldwide Pants production company) of the 12.30 show, and, to find the replacement host for Late Night should he want to give up during the period of the deal.
I guess if Dave has a say in the replacement, then the smart money must be on Craig.
