Why should England get so many regions for the BBC and ITV, yet everywhere else gets nations?

Or to be more precise, population density.

Okay.. if it they really are 'nations' then shouldn't the regional news at 6 be their 'sub-regions' and then news at 6.30 should be their national news?

That make any senseE? Laughing

Scotland has 3 franchise, so this just leaves NI, and of course HTV area, before its creation in 1968, Wales have two franchise, northern half went bust...

Scotland having three, soon to become two, would be the same as England having four because its larger?

For ITV maybe, but for the BBC it's politics.

The West Midlands population is larger than Wales and Scotland combined, yet only gets local news programmes, while the BBC Nations have a much wider and varied range of programmes.

If we are going with population density, then London should also be a Nation, or split into smaller regions.

So we could have had LWT ( London weekday/weekend) on one side of the Thames with Thames on the other side. Does seems a bit strange. but would have been interesting.

More like borough wise? With 6/7 boroughs together, or more?

I don't think anybody was being serious, Dan! Razz

I do think Scotland could be knocked down to two/three regions on the BBC, same with North and South Wales - the two halves of the nation are so vasty different and I do wonder how their news needs are catered for by 1 national service!

As much as I understand your point in terms of population density, Martin: there is a specific reason why some areas are referred to as 'nations' and others as 'regions'. But I'm sure you already really accept that! Wink

In terms of regions, the BBC represents England very well, IMO: far better than ITV plc.

Perhaps the issue comes from the visibility of distinct versions for Scotland/NI/Wales, and yet nothing named as England as a whole, despite showing many more 'English-only programmes' in terms of production hours.

After the national versions of BBC One HD are introduced for Scot/Wal/NI, is there any reason why the network can't be branded as 'BBC One HD England'?
