And then to cap it all the awful Trevor MacDonald wins the Special Achievement Award.

Awful ? He has been around for decades, been there for many world changing events and interviewed some of the worlds most influential people. Certainly more worthy than any of his latter day counterparts. Looking back at that tribute they showed to him, the man is a legend Rolling Eyes

Fair enough - perhaps I was a tad harsh and a tad hasty. I just don't like him, but then I suppose that's no reason to deny him an award!

I think he's awful too. He may have been around for decades but that doesn't make him any good.

His voice gets on my nerves, the way he moves his head, it's all just so false and awkward.

Why they get him to host the National TV Awards, I've no idea - he's even worse on that than he is on the news!

No but he is good. You may not like his style and delivery, but that's probably because he's part of the old school authoritian type. And for a black man to achieve so much to the point where he is top-of-the-tree has to be respected.

No, it's not that he's authoritarian - and he's not anyway, if you can't take him seriously how can he have authority? It's that he's stilted, uncomfortable and awkward. It's like he's a new boy rather than old school!

And why should the fact that he's black be taken into account? I think that's insulting. I judge him on how he reads the news, not by his colour.

I'm taking his colour into account, because he achieved a milestone, in becoming the first black presenter to present at ITN (did u not see the tribute?) Admittedly, it's not the most important thing, but's a huge achievement, and you can't dispute that.

At the risk of this getting a little unpleasant, being a good presenter is one thing. Being a black presenter is neither here nor there, surely? Hey may well have been the first man of colour to do the job but that in itself is not "an achievement".

I just dont like his style at all, I'm afraid.

Oh, but my friend, it is an achievement. Don't forget it was in the days before the politically correct brigade came to the fore. I know people who have frequently hit that glass ceiling.

Anyway, I wasn't intentionally trying to confuse this with the issue of whether you like him or not, I was just putting my reason to why I think he deserved that award.

Well if you count that as an achievement, surely it's an acheivement by the person who appointed him.

His acheivement is that he has been in television news for decades, he has brought many world changing events to people, exclusive interviews and is respected worldwide by colleagues, international heads of state, and as has been proved in poll after poll, the general public.

There aren't many of his colleagues on any other network whose careers have spanned such magnitude and command quite so much universal respect.

I too am insulted by that comment !! His race should have nothing to do with his achievement !! While on the other hand his ability to do his job has. I dont rate him much - he speaks down to you (as if you are 4 years old) esp on the tonight programme !! But then who else have ITN got - gone are the greats like Sandy Gall and they have never been replaced!!

I think that's the old News At Ten set. On closer inspection, it's not the current set anyway.

What, when someone actually watched it Very Happy

I don't like Trevor McDonald. I know he has done alot, and I think he did deserve the award, but it is pure comedy when this autocue fails. He is totally lost. I also find him wooden.

Also, without wishing to be bitter, I think WWTBAM winning was wring- it is past it's sell by date and dull. BUT I am very unhappy that GMTV won. I was so happy last year when they plastered their number everywhere, then lost to bargain hunt. Great!

I agree with Square Eyes and CPFC re: Trevor McDonald - give the man his due
Most of us will never have a career that even comes close !
