Has anyone got that feeling that EastEnders will sweep the board?

Yes, but I hope not! I want Bradley Walsh to win best actor although I think it will be Doctor Who (as long as it isnt EE then im happy) and Corrie to win Best Soap (although again as long as it ISNT Eastenders i'm happy but Corrie and EE are the only ones likely to win unless Emmerdale surprise us all!)

Last year Corrie won 3 awards - Most Popular Serial Drama, Newcomer (Sam Aston) and Actress (Suranne Jones) and EE got nothing. Eastenders won in 2003 and Corrie went home with nothing. Its a difficult one to call this year really, I wouldnt be surprised if either soap won it to be honest.

Dr Who took a hat-trick of awards at Britain's TV Oscars tonight - marking a remarkable comeback for the sci-fi show.

Christopher Eccleston scooped Most Popular Actor; his co-star, Billie Piper was named Most Popular Actress; and the show itself won Most Popular Drama at the National Television Awards.

The BBC1 drama beat heavyweights like Channel 4's Desperate Housewives, as well as The Bill and Bad Girls, to the Drama crown.

Despite quitting as the Doctor after just one series, Eccleston beat off competition from EastEnders' Nigel Harman (Dennis) and Shane Richie (Alfie), Bradley Walsh (Danny) and Martin Clunes for the Actor gong.

Former singer Piper, who has won praise for her role as Doctor's Assistant Rose, also won against popular names such as Caroline Quentin, EastEnders 'Jessie Wallace (Kat) and June Brown (Dot) and Coronation Street's Sally Lindsay (Shelley).

EastEnders may have been going through a rough time earlier this year, but tonight it was celebrating after winning the Most Popular Serial Drama category over Coronation Street.

But Coronation Street's new star, Antony Cotton (Sean), won Most Popular Newcomer.

Sharon Osbourne beat her X Factor rival Simon Cowell to Most Popular Expert on TV, while the show itself won Most Popular Entertainment Programme over Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, and Strictly Come Dancing.

Ant and Dec won Most Popular Entertainment Presenter for the fifth year running, over Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross and Paul O'Grady.

But the former Lily Savage star did not go home empty-handed, as his new show, The Paul O'Grady show, won Most Popular Daytime Programme at the glittering ceremony in the Royal Albert Hall.

Channel 4's Big Brother took the crown for Most Popular Reality Programme, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Most Popular Quiz Programme.

Little Britain was named Most Popular Comedy Programme in the awards that are voted for by viewers, and Jamie Oliver walked away with both Most Popular Factual Programme for Jamie's School Dinners and a Special Recognition Award

Erm, I don't want to be a spoilsport, but the awards stories are clearly embargoed by PA News until 2230.

Little Britain was named Most Popular Comedy Programme in the awards that are voted for by viewers, and Jamie Oliver walked away with both Most Popular Factual Programme for Jamie's School Dinners and a Special Recognition AWard

The Winners:

Most Popular Entertainment Presenter: Ant and Dec

Most Popular Expert on TV: Sharon Osbourne

Most Popular Entertainment Programme: The X Factor

Most Popular Reality Programme: Big Brother

Most Popular Drama: Dr Who

Most Popular Serial Drama: EastEnders

Most Popular Newcomer: Antony Cotton, Coronation Street

Most Popular Actor: Christopher Eccleston

Most Popular Actress: Billie Piper

Most Popular Quiz Programme: Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

Most Popular Daytime Programme: The Paul O'Grady Show

Most Popular Comedy Programme: Little Britain

Most Popular Factual Programme: Jamie's School Dinners

Special Recognition Award: Jamie Oliver

TV Landmark: Tony Warren (creator of Coronation Street)

Piper thanked the show's director, viewers and writers as she picked up the award for Most Popular Drama for Dr Who with some of her co-stars.

But she did not appear to thank her co-star Eccleston, who was not at tonight's ceremony, in her acceptance speech.

She said later: "Chris is not here this evening, I don't know why."

Of the new incumbent, David Tennant, she said: "He's a lot lighter on his feet and I am sure you will all be thrilled."

O'Grady said after receiving his award: "Who designs these bloody awards? They look like sperm in a biology class.

"I'm really delighted, really pleased. These are voted for by viewers not some committee in the Ivy (restaurant). I'd really like to thank the viewers, who are the most important, for voting for us."

Receiving the award for Most Popular Entertainment Programme for The X Factor, Cowell said: "I suppose we have to thank the people that make the show - the contestants."

Sharon Osbourne was not at the ceremony tonight, apparently on a business trip.

After Cowell's band was booted out of the last episode of the ITV show, the music boss said there were going to be some changes this week "that will make it a lot fairer, sensible and apparent".

He said it was not sour grapes. "We look at the show every week and ask 'can we improve it?"' he said. "Winning is the best feeling in the world. The only awards shows that matter are those that the public vote for."

Sharon's daughter Kelly turned up at the ceremony instead of her mother.

Picking up the actress award, Piper thanked her "lovely boyfriend", Mr E (thought to be former husband Chris Evans) and Eccleston "for being a fantastic doctor and teaching me so much".

Wearing a short black figure-hugging dress, she said: "Thank you so much. This means so much to me, I can't even begin to tell you."

She thanked the show bosses for taking a "huge gamble".

Oliver supported a black eye as he picked up his award for Jamie's School Dinners.

Backstage he wouldn't answer questions about how he got the bruise but said he was not drunk.

Collecting the award he said: "Thank you so much for the viewers that voted. Without them I wouldn't have this phallic-looking thing."

He joked: "I'd like to thank the parents that pass McDonald's (through the railings) on the way to school and the kids that threw up on me and my food. It's been tough but things might change and it's getting better."

Dr WHO writer Russell T Davies read out a note of thanks on behalf of Eccleston.

The Dr Who star congratulated his fellow nominees adding: "I'm very sorry that I can't be there tonight. Thank you to everybody who voted for me, and to the British public for their encouragement over the last 17 years. They have always been honest with me and I'm very grateful."

He dedicated the award to a little boy who "loves Dr Who and loves life".

Can't understand why ITV couldn't show this tonight!

Inevitably, this thread is going to go on to discuss the results, and they'll be all over TV and the papers in the morning, so be warned, SPOILERS ALERT

I SAID SPOILERS ALERT

I can't believe EastEnders won best "serial drama" again!!!! It's in the third year of it's "blip", and this has probably been the worst year of all. Never has Corrie been so much better regarded than EastEnders!

I'm glad though Doctor Who sweeped the drama categories, but the nominations (never mind winner) for Best Newcomer were very uninspired. I'm sure I've read Anthony Cotton was in Queer as Folk - meaning he's been in the business since at least the late nineties!

Ant and Dec - no surprise, and fantastic Big Brother won best reality programme, though with the TV climate changing, I think that category will soon go. Good to see The X Factor recognised as well, though surprised Sharon Osbourne won the expert award.

Jamie's School Dinners was rightly rewarded, though I suspect the special award to Jamie Oliver may have been compensation for losing the expert category. They give these special awards out too early - yes, the programme has had more political impact than most others, but lets wait and see the results of it first!

Best daytime and quiz was no surprise, though I think Max and Paddy should have edged out Little Britain for best comedy, considering the second series was well below par!

No doubt the Mitchell brothers went on to get the award with someone talking how they are now back on top with great storylines coming up etc.

This in the year when EastEnders has repeatly received its lowest ever ratings and been beaten by Emmerdale every time it went head to head

TV critics across the land will be wondering what has gone on. I'm sure Richard Arnold will be surprised on GMTV tommorow

Corrie were robbed Evil or Very Mad Thanks a bunch British Public!

Happy that Doctor Who won 3 awards and at least it stopped someone from Eastenders getting the actor and actress awards.

Also glad the X Factor won, they deserved that, as did The Paul O Grady Show for daytime

I didnt expect Anthony Cotton to win newcomer , oh well at least Corrie didnt go home empty handed.

The rest of the results were predictable like WWTBAM winning Quiz for about the 6th year running (zzzzzzzzzz)

Well we all know that the TV Quick / Whats On TV readers go in for these votes don't we Jez, the magazines with Alfie Moon on the cover week in, week out.

If viewers have been voting on recent stuff, I don't think you'd expect Corrie to come out top really. It did have a bit of a summer lull, although even during it's dullest recent patch it's still been out front.

That said, Eastenders has been consistently bad. In all truth, for it's recent storylines Emmerdale for once should have come out on top.
