what makes me wonder is why radio4 play it when they are joining the world service (the same (isn't it?) as news24 on BBC1?

There's a significant part of Radio 4's listenership which are very stuck in their ways and incredibly protective of the station. They don't like to see anything change. ISTR there were protests outside broadcasting house when the schedule was changed slightly a few years ago, and also a protest march when there were plans to take Radio 4 off Long Wave. If they removed something as significant as the National Anthem, there'd be riots.

IMHO Sailing By makes a perfect national anthem, I'd propose that the Rugby Authorities take Radio4's lead and adopt it as well.

Whilst on the subject BFBS Germany used to have the National Anthem and Last Post, before carrying on with more programmes. Just because the thing was sort of 24/7 didn't stop them maintaining a valued tradition!

Nope!

In fact the only time you'll hear the Welsh anthem these days is at the start of a Rugby international game.

Would be nice to hear it more often, though. It's a far superior piece of music to God Save The Queen.

Up until 1988, HTV Wales's closedown featured both "Land of My Fathers" and the British National Anthem, IMO the nicest arrangement of the anthem used as part of a closedown sequence; an orchestral arrangement that wasn't pompous and dominated by loud brass and drums.

Talking about 'H.T.V.':

H.T.V. got taken over by carlton. As you know, they took the branding identity away, but in reality, does the company 'H.T.V. Wales' still exist as an 'itvplc' company?

SORRY TO GO OFF TOPIC, BUT AFTERALL, IT IS MY TOPIC!

Yes HTV still exists as the franchise holder for Wales and the West. However its called ITV1 Wales and ITV1 West on screen.

OK you're royally pi$$ing me off now with your obsession about putting points in things.

Grammatically speaking, you are correct to put a full stop between H and T as they are two seperate words - Harlech and Television. However placing a dot between T and V is wrong as "TV" is an abbreviation of the word television. A comparitive example would be LWT, where L.W.T. would be correct as it represents three words.

However you do not use full stops inbetween letters in acronyms where the acronym is the recognisable stand-alone name of a company or a phrase. Examples include RSPB, RSPCA, NSPCC, LWT, BBC, SWEB, HTV, ITV, S4C, CBS, UPN, ABC, NBC, WRU etc. So please refrain from using them as it displays an ignorance not only of the TV companies involved but of the English language in general.
