The National Anthem was a big "hit" for the BBC, sorry. BBC channels but times have changed and so has television. More and more channels are running 24-7, and due to the change in music, the public would probably expect a new Hip Hop/RnB side to the National Anthem to be played out... could be worse... could be a Crazy Frog remix...!

The idea that 24 hour broadcasting precludes a station from playing the Anthem is ridiculous - why not have a, if not quite 'closedown', then at least a goodnight announcement, followed by the anthem with a fade to black, and then News 24 or whatever kicking in?

Essentially it would just be an extended version of the goodnight message from the announcer we currently get anyway.

National Anthem. Radio 4, 12:59am daily without fail!

They also play it just before the 07:00 and 08:00 news on the day of a senior royal's birthday. Can give you heart failure if you have just tuned in and forgotten the date. You think one of them has died!

I know what you mean, but there is a big difference between the arrangements of the standard closdown anthem and the obit one.

Mind you, in the days of ITV regions playing the anthem at closedown, some stations had very sombre arrangements of it. There's one on The Continuity Booth I think that's extremely down-beat! ITV regions often played it over slides of the Royals visitng the region, whereas the BBC simply played it over the spinning globe until it's final incarnation when it was played over a compilation of the baloon idents, finishing with the baloon sailing out over the open sea ... all very nice!

TerryK, none of the videos on Continuity Booth works. However, they are merging with The TV Room, so we can wait, I guess!

I think BBC One broadcasting for 24 hours was just an excuse to get rid of the National Anthem really.

I think the fundamental problem is that our National Anthem is the only one in the world dedicated to the head of state. In a society where love of the Monarchy is no longer universal, I can see the BBC proclaiming 'God Save The Queen' might not be welcomed by a large section of the population. I wonder if the National Anthem was 'Land Of Hope And Glory' whether it might still be played every night.

Well if offends certain people in a broadcasting context, then surely it does on a much broader level too?!

Either it's an accepted national anthem or it isn't...

We have similar 'issues' with ours in Ireland, but they're largely glossed over too, not least as they're more embarrassing than offensive Embarassed

what makes me wonder is why radio4 play it when they are joining the world service (the same (isn't it?) as news24 on BBC1?
