Hi,
I am interested in getting hold of the music from ceefax, oracle, and possibly bbc schools. I also remember music being played late at night on the bbc during the odd continuity for a few minutes with static pictures of tv programs but not with an announcer over the top. so it wasn't an ad break as such. I have had a quick look on youtube but can't find an example. the main era of time I am interested in would be 1980s and 1990s.
does anyone know who I would need to contact to get hold of the music used? its not really the sort of thing they sell in shops!

At lot of the music played on ceefax, and BBC Schools was library piece, or strange commercial pieces from the 1960/70s. I don't remember oracle, having music? Maybe you mean the ITV start ups if so alot of them are floating around

There two ways to point you in the right direction,
( IF you just after the one TAPE; someone might be able to help you, you'll need to tell us which tape Wink )

IF its alot of them, then I suggest you try the following:

* http://www.testcardcircle.org.uk/ I think its £15 a year.
* testcardmusic on yahoo groups which has list of all Ceefax music.

Here is the logs for Ch4: http://www.sculptor.clara.net/ch4/testcard-music.html

There has also been a few commercial release if your looked
* http://www.whr.org.uk/ look at WHR CD, Watch with Watch with Teacher (Catalogue number WHRCD801) is out of print and has many school tracks
* http://www.apollosound.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=62
loads on Amazon and ebay of other CDS .

I don't think Ceefax music was used during the intervals Ie during the odd continuity but again some of that has managed to get on CD or is on youtube.

My favorite Ceefax tape is Sweet mood Very Happy

awesome thanks for the comprehensive helpful reply. I seem to have stumbled upon some oracle footage on youtube which has some music and it sounds like it might be from the actual video rather than overdubbed?

I can definitely spot the stuff that could be from 60s and 70s but I have also heard music which used electronic synths, like at 2:45 on the above, that from the sounds of things is using the electronic kit of the time it was aired? sounds quite mid 80s. it could be a 70s synth but those drums sound far more 80s to me. what do you think?

I will probably be looking into trying to get as much of it as I can rather than a specific one. I find it all so varied ,nostalgic and interesting Smile

If your after as much as you can then I do strongly suggest joining the http://www.testcardcircle.org.uk/ that should be your first port of call.

The footage you found was by "Christopher Williams" There not real its got a BBC tape over Ch4 pages. Here is the logs for Ch4: http://www.sculptor.clara.net/ch4/testcard-music.html Its is from the 80s.

There are quite a lot of Ceefax videos on YouTube, not all of them genuine! Testcard music and Ceefax music, used by the BBC, was difrerent to interval music (used on Follows shortly slides) and breakdown music and was differently licensed and reported I think. Start up music used by itv regions was usually the same piece of music every day and was often an extended version of the stations ident theme. A lot of them are also on YouTube.

Some Ceefax music has been retrospectively commercially released, or was actually commercially released in the first place (but not in the uk). I've often wondered quite how the relatively obscure Japanese piano/jazz artist Himiko Kikuchi and film score composer Vladimir Cosma actually ended up on several Ceefax tapes...

Anything uploaded by Christopher Williams is almost guaranteed to be fabricated rubbish.

I don't recall that style of music on C4 test card/Oracle pages, and some of the pages are fabrications.

Take a look at 10:55 Open University progs on C4 ? Err no, never. And I don't ever recall Thames or any other ITV region having its programme schedules on Oracle in Vision, (for obvious reasons !) Core peak time network schedule perhaps

Oh, I know who it's from, I was pointing out to 'seefacts' that not even that video can be relied upon to be genuine.

I must say, the fake Oracle pages are very well done, but obviously Williams has far too much time on his hands
