Murdochs grap on itv in the 1970s

I notice a number of website claiming Murdoch's after casing alarm bells at the IBA make his leave LWT by in 1971.
which cant be correct as it seems following facts have appeared:

* 9th March 1971 John Freeman was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive of LWT. He made one of his conditions of coming to LWT be that Rupert Murdoch stayed on. In April 1971 the Independent Television Authority announced that London Weekend was "secure in its contract."

* Murdoch stake in London Weekend Television was sold in 1979/80

When did IBA tell him to leave LWT? When did he leave the broad of LWT?

I'm not sure of the ins and outs but Murdoch withdrew from LWT a long time before 1979/80, if anything his tenure I believe only lasted around a year or two. If anything it was probably the ITA who told him to bugger off.

I take it 1973 would be a better guess? surly cant have been 71 since he only just got the 36% by then and the new chief wanted him kept.

Would be interesting (in a hypothetical sense) to see the hold he'd have on the UK media if he remained at LWT and subsequently ITV itself. As a consequence to that, such a decision might not have seen him creating Sky Television, so the media & television landscape could be extremely different.

It would rather interesting to see what if: If He was allowed to be part of BSB group.

I take it no one has a date? the makes it a bit easier.

It wasn't just LWT and BSB that he/Sky were prevented from being a part of, Sky were also originally a shareholder in ONdigital.

A few years later they did become part of Freeview though
