Seems rights issues are surrounding the Ali retrospect on catchup and online. Live restart is blocked.

Using the Watch from Start link on the BBC One website, it takes you to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/live/bbcone?rewindTo=current where you'll see the credits over Casualty, then a caption comes up.

Here's how it was introduced for those interested.

Weird choice of ident. Unless it's an oblique reference to "float like a butterfly"? But they're not butterflies.

What is the de facto sombre ident these days anyway, Capes, Kites, Helicopter? They miss the Moon one for these situations.

Kites is the ident I most associate with news/breaking news despite Helicopter being the better option IMO… although when it comes to newsflashes I still mourn the passing of the traditional 'News Report' slide rather than any kind of ident with soundtrack

I think it highlights that there isn't an obvious powerful, poignant "This is BBC One" Circle ident to call upon. They're all a rather samey mush, visually and aurally.

The flagship channel could really do with its own "Silk".

It's also not quite a jungle, but a forest will do. Probably more appropriate than capes, kites and helicopter really and it didn't need a completely sombre ident, but it is something BBC1 is definately missing.

And having seemingly not watched BBC1 live for quite some time didn't realise those light bulb stings and endboards were still around.

I've been watching a lot of 91-97 continuity recently and it strikes me how much more flexible the silent ident was. The announcer could talk over a menu or programme slide and continue their sentence straight into the globe. I'd have thought it wouldn't take much to have an ident similar to this these days, using something similar to the breakdown animation (without the 'We're sorry for the interruption' text obviously). https://youtu.be/JRCPVFhzieA?t=42s

Silent idents pre-97 are seen as old hat now but I do think they are missed when it comes to situations like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aaLVn1kR3c

I was hoping for a nice example of such a situation being well handled in the 90s when clicking on the Youtube clip, not that fiasco. To be fair in this case the ident itself wasn't so much the issue - it was crashing into the news channel rather than handing over to the newsroom for them to announce Mandela's death in a dignified manner.

Very Happy Okay - here's a couple from the 90s with proper 'News Report's:

Which is totally deserved. However...... David Bowie had to make do with a 30 minute tribute hidden away against Corrie. I guess they had an Ali Tribute in can for many years though.

can someone post that please and also a nice touch was a minute's applause at epsom today

I assume you mean the David Bowie BBC News special: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXAPw9dOMLs

no I mean the french open tribute to ali at the end of yesterday's coverage

They also had a studio chat using the tenuous link that Ali had claimed that if he'd had taken up tennis he'd have been the greatest tennis player in the world. It's hardly worth searching out though - just another tribute amongst the many made yesterday.
