Not sure why the show that is on now (Chart Blast) is showing videos like the above screen. Perhaps all SD videos are shown like that.

Click to enlarge, click again to get to full size. Will try and record the ident at 9pm.

Chart Blast is the only show that does that. It reminds me of what a lot of the US HD news channels do, using the full frame to add extra text. AFAIK it's the only programme that has 4:3 videos, the other programmes that show music videos have HD videos (of which there aren't too many) and upscaled videos produced in 16:9 SD.

Most of the channel's HD content comes from programmes like MTV Live, MTV Unplugged, 2$Bill, VH1 Storytellers etc. The only non-music programmes are a late-night extreme sports show, and the Nickelodeon block on weekend mornings (during which time the MTV logo in the DOG is replaced by the Nick one).

And yes the "N" in MTVNHD stands for "Networks". I remember a year or two ago taking part in a survey that asked about a HD channel showing a mix of content from all of MTV's networks - MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon and Paramount Comedy. Seems that the Paramount part was later dropped, probably due to it being a pan-European channel.

I have put the ident on YouTube - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_MIdx7g7uXM

You will have to imagine what it would be like in HD obviously!

EDIT- You can click view in HD underneath and it shows it in better quality, sorry for the lack of sound, I recorded 30 mins of the programme and had to use some software to edit the recording so I didnt have to convert the whole 1.1GB but the sound must have been lost in the conversion process!

Yes, known over there as 'HD Real Estate' - they use the extra space given to them by the 16:9 HD format to put extra stuff in.

It's never happened over here as we went to 16:9 SD first which meant that we could mix up 4:3 and 16:9 on our channels. The exsistance of 14:9 also meant that it wasn't possible.

The US having just 4:3 analogue and 16:9 HD is in some ways far more intuitive
