The MTV EMA's 2005 are currently being aired on five right now. Aside from the fact that MTV have added that stupid
and pointless filmic effect again for no good reason whatsoever, the show is being broadcast in 16:9 widescreen.

I'm sure if MTV had started showing programs in 16:9 format, it would've merited a thread or at least a mention on
this forum. Was this year's MTV EMA show originally shown in16:9 when it was on MTV, or has it been cropped?

It was shown in 4:3, though I guess MTV could have cropped it to 4:3. I don't understnad why the film effect is still being used- it looks awful. Other people have caught on- the last 2 VMAs have not used them, presumably realising how bad it looks.

I saw around 10 minutes of the repeat on five last night and what I cold tell from what I saw is it looked like the footage from the arena was 16:9 (possibly HD) but the inserts (such as the nominations, but also the introduction to the Pussycat Dolls performance) were clearly 4:3 and had been cropped by five. My presumption is the 16:9 footage had been cropped to 4:3 before broadcast on MTV, and the inserts were played out over the 4:3 feed. For the five broadcast they have pieced it together using the 16:9 raw footage, and cropping the inserts.
