I honestly thought Brendan O'Carroll wouldn't sign another contract with the Beeb. It appears to be a distraction from the more lucrative stage show, but possibly Covid may have had a change of heart to keep their profile, especially in the UK.
All the articles for this use the Irish version of The Sun as the source. Until the BBC or RTE confirm, I'm not actually believing it.
But The Sun’s source is O’Carroll, if it was just something they’d made up they wouldn’t name the source.
Of course it’s possible he’s saying that and they’re going to surprise viewers on New Years Day by killing her off, as he has raised the idea he would write that into a script before but I’d imagine it’s unlikely.
I know many people have always hated it, but even those who did like it will agree that it isn’t as good as it was, and it’s just going through the motions now with minimal plot to the episodes.
At the rate it’s going it’s going to have been on more Christmas Days than the likes of Only Fools and Horses, The Two Ronnies, Morecambe and Wise...
When the first series came on, I found it quite funny. Something a bit different. Almost like a televised pantomime. I enjoyed it.
Series two, felt a bit repetitive, but nevertheless, I watched some of them, when there was nothing else on.
Now we're on series forty-six*, I have to wonder how many times the BBC think we can we laugh at a man in make up saying 'feck', the same slapstick scenes slightly repackaged, and the same carefully rehearsed 'bloopers'.
The show seems to have a distinct reminiscence of the (purposefully shoddy) sitcom
When The Whistle Blows
in the Ricky Gervais series
Extras
- even down to the use of a wig and catchphrases.
For me, it's well and truly had its day now.
* Alright, perhaps a slight exaggeration (though it feels like that).
RTE foot some of the bill and the show (appears at face value) to have a very low production budget. It might be bollocks, but investment-to-ratings wise I’m sure it’s at the top.
