Hopefully this won't degenerate into what every other thread on Digital Spy seems to be but MPs, who seem to value the BBC far less than the rest of us, apart from as an international propaganda tool, are recommending the scrapping of the "outdated" licence fee at the end of the next charter period (2025 or so) to be replaced by a "broadcast levy" payable by all households, regardless of whether they have a TV or not - which seems even more unfair IMO, although of course includes people who only watch on the iPlayer etc. Also of course they want to give the money to anyone who wants it for local news and childrens content too.

Other recommendations include scrapping the BBC Trust in favour of a "Public Service Broadcasting Commission", while OFCOM would rule on impartiality and accuracy, plus the idea that the BBC should no longer aim to be "something for everyone", especially where commercial broadcasters cater for the audience. That seems to be MPs saying they don't watch BBC3 so they're happy for it to go IMO.

One good point they do make though is that BBC1+1 does not represent any "public service value" and that the space should be used for something else instead.

Don't we go through this every time the charter's up for renewal?

The so-called "broadcast levy" is a feasible idea. The German system is just under €18 a month, which works out to £156 a year - not much more than ours. Can't find other details as the Wiki sources all 404.

The Ofcom being the final port of call comes up regularly. Since they already deal with various BBC issues through the bulletins it kind of makes sense to go the whole hog.
