But then Fern and Phil are both ex-Continuity Announcers, so used to keeping calm and winging it when things are going pear shaped

When was Fern an announcer?

Obviously I remember Phil from his CBBC days!

Fern as far as I know has never done continuity. She used to be a news reader mind! I remember her on BBC Breakfast Time years ago.

She did some continuity at Westward TV in the late 70s/early 80s. She recommended the job to that famous voice - Trish Bertram.

I can recall she was an announcer for TVS as well as Westward.

Don't think she ever announced for TVS, she co-presented Coast to Coast with Fred Dinenage though.

When Fern and Phillip appeared on the Frank Skinner show a few years ago, Frank pulled out some vintage Westward continuity of Fern's and I believe they went for some New Zealand material from Phillip. Bit of a shock because everybody assumes they will go straight to the Broom Cupboard archive.

Fern started her tv career as a continuity announcer for Westward television . She then moved to BBC Southwest as the regions local news programme presenter then to BBC1 as lunchtime newsreader - then to Breakfast Time during the Frank Bough era - in the late 80s she went to TVS to present Coast to Coast with Fred Dineage until TVS lost it's franchise. She was one of the original reporters when London Tonight started before achieving national fame again with Ready Steady Cook.

That almost sounds like a voiceover from Mr Dickson Laughing

When a breakdown happens, I want to experience the following :-

Hot cut by TX to a mute breakdown slide.
Announcer's mike faded up slightly prematurely as he runs into the booth and sits down.
Hot cut to the in-vision announcer with slightly messy hair and the backdrop slightly waving from side to side.
Standard apology.
Cut back to slide.
Breakdown music kicks in with a slight 'wow' at the start due to being played off a clumsily cued Sonifex cartridge machine.
etc

ahh the good old days !
