It may not be the exact article, but it means that Channel 4 have won the slot, as it says that More4 will be launching on Freeview.

More4 is launching on Freeview anyway. They have 4 channels on their half of MUX 2. One is C4 the other is rented out to TUTV. That means they have 2 slots free!

OK - I've just read your post a couple of posts back. Either way, the thread title is still misleading!
However, I still find it hard to believe that Channel 4 have yet another new channel in the pipeline. They still don't seem 100% sure what to put on More4, let alone another new channel, and that's been in the pipeline for years!
Yes, I said yesterday that More 4 was launching regardless of who got this slot, but it seems that this "tvfreak" character is not capable of grasping the concept.
The channel that will launch from 4 will be different as More4 is going to be put on the ITV/Channel 4 mux. It is believed that Channel 4 will use this space to make E4 free to view.

E4 already has a slot regardless of whether it becomes available on Freeview. C4 rent space to Top Up TV, rather than Top Up TV hosting E4.
I've said before I can't see what they want the slot for - but they obviously have something in mind as otherwise they wouldn't have gone for it!

You might as well say "they have 20 channels on their half of Mux 2". They don't have any number of channels in their (not quite - don't forget Teletext have Mux 2 space) half of Mux 2 - they have a raw data capacity of just around 11Mbs. What they do with this data is up to them - there isn't a fixed number of channels, you just trade off picture quality against the number of channels.
You could squeeze in 20 channels at less than 0.5Mbs, or one really high quality channel at a better-than-DVD quality 11Mbs.
If you try and squeeze in 4 channels into 11Mbs - that will mean each one is averaging less than 3Mbs. Not a recipe for good picture quality. BBC One in England is around 4.6Mbs - almost 50% higher. Even if C4 use better MPEG2 encoding - it won't offer a 50% improvement. Anyone watching in London, where ITV are shoe-horning ITV1/2/3 and the News Channel into their (not quite) half of Mux 2 will be able to testify at the really poor picture quality of ITV2/3/News Channel (ITV1 is a bit better) Plastic faces, horribly pre-softened and still loads of motion break-up. Try watching any fast cut music stuff on ITV2/3 - it is unwatchable - at least in London.
AIUI C4 currently broadcast C4, A TopUpTV channel and PriceDrop (I think) in their half of Mux 2 ?
Maybe C4 have accepted that 3 channels in 11Mbs is more than enough - and are buying extra capacity for their 4th so that they don't turn their existing output into mush.
With Sky launching HD next year - I suspect keeping standard def looking as good as possible will be important to broadcasters who aren't planning to go HD instantly...

Don't get picky about terminology. You knew exactly what they meant!
As for C4 - they currently only have two channels in their space as Pricedrop went to the SDN Mux a few months ago.
Therefore even with three "channels" in the space there is room for More4.

Not being picky at all. As far as I'm concerned they don't have room for 4 channels at an acceptable quality. ITV have decided to broadcast some of their channels at very low quality levels to squeeze four in, certainly not close to "acceptable" quality in my book. However ITV on DSat is just as bad (if not worse) - bottom line is I just don't watch much on their channels - I'd rather watch pictures than artefacts.
I hadn't realised that Price Drop had moved - C4 could as you say squeeze 3 services in at an OK level (though still not great).
