Johnny Vegas: What did ya do when that tv thing went belly up?
(Shows monkey tied to a truck's radiator grill)

Yeah, that line made me laugh when I caught the advert last night. Laughing

It can't be very often that the exact same thing (e.g. Johnny & Monkey) used to advertise one thing, eventually ends up being used to advertise something else altogether.

Given that the Aardman birdies were never that great IMHO, I'm glad that PG Tips are trying something else. Plus, the inclusion of a monkey (albeit not a real one) is a good hark back to the good old chimp days. I was thankful when the chimps were dropped, cuz it did always strike me as cruel/un-PC etc, but the Aardman birds were a not-as-good-as-expected replacement IMHO.

I generally adore Aardman. But the humour of the PG birdies ads seemed a bit flat. And, given the time-consuming nature of stop-frame claymation, it was never really viable for the birdie ads to last anywhere near as long as the chimps ones had. (Well, unless they just showed the same handful of ads over and over again. But keeping up to date with new ones would be a bit of a mission).

Repeating the exact same ads for donkey's years is also a pain-in-the-neck, in terms of having to use editorial/computery jiggery pokery to always put the most current packaging design of the product into an old advert.

Having Carol Decker renting a room in their house, how twisted is that Laughing Ah dawn't get it monkeh!

The ad is up there with Malibu, Churchill, Privilege, Vauxhall Moreva (sp?) and E-Sure Wink

Never really understood why Vegas and Monkey got the cult appeal they did.

If ITV Digital had survived, they'd probably be a forgotten memory by now.

Great ad that - really hope it works for them; not sure if they're pitching to the right PG Tips audience though.

Must've set them back a bit - not only the intellectual rights to Al & Munkey, but a 2 minute slot in the middle of that ITV soap some people watch.

Didn't Aardman use Wallace and Gromit in one or two of the PG Tips adverts around the time of their film?
