Simply, Orbit was the name of BBC2's teletext magazine before both channels' services came under the Ceefax name. However, you'll notice Ceefax is still in the header.

I've never heard of that before. Seems such an odd thing to do so early on in the service

Not really. As far as I understand it, the teletext service on BBC2 was supposed to be the electronic equivalent of a published magazine, and was given a distinct title - Orbit - to mark it out from the Ceefax news and weather etc service.

Yes but with so few viewers back then I'm surprised they went as far as producing two different services with two names

The graphical style is way ahead of its time and far more advanced than what 'Ceefax' had

I guess those were different times when expense may not have been such a worry and you deliberately didn't have duplication of content across the channels.

Looking at the sections, it definitely appeared more in-depth content-wise, rather than the headline and bullet-point led main Ceefax service. I especially like the Canalphone info on works and closure dates for Britain's waterways! (p290/291)

Now it's mentioned I do recall the Orbit branding.

Another odd thing they did was show selected pages from Austria's ORF !

Select P197 here

I remember the day we first had a teletext telly, the last at college before Easter 1981.
We had a half day, I rushed home and spent the entire afternoon selecting just about every page
on all three channels. The remote batteries were flat by evening !

I used to do the same thing, go through every page just to see if there was any interesting pages I could find Embarassed

There was a selection of "tagging" idents, and IIRC the only one that made it to air was the football one. It got a hostile reaction, so I won't be surprised if this was simply shelved.

How hard is it to miss someone holding a giant stencil with a can of spray paint?
