Former BBC TV presenter and Radio 1 DJ Mike Smith has died at the age of 59 after complications during Heart Surgery.

Hosted shows such as Noel Edmonds Late Late Breakfast Show, Live Aid, Ghostwatch, Top of the Pops. I even remember him on ITV hosting the gameshow Body Heat with Sally Gunnell.

He was married to Going Live presenter Sarah Greene for 25 years.

I've just seen this flash up. Sad news, especially due to complications.

I don't remember him for radio 1, but your mention of body heat has jogged a lot of memories. I also remember him for a panel show about the arts, I think it was called 'that's entertainment'

I always remember him presenting the week long series "Railwatch" in 1989, which spent a week looking behind the scenes at British Rail. He really reveled in that role, and I was just watching some bits of Railwatch the other day.

He was also a part time driver in the BTCC in 1989.

I remember Mike Smith doing a flexi disc ad for Natwest in the mid 80s, which came free with Smash Hits. A great broadcaster who cemented the sound of Radio 1 in the mid 80s.

Found some Youtube clips of him of probably some of his most famous TV moments.

This is him rounding off BBC's coverage of Live Aid in 1985:

And this is a fairly long clip of Going Live! after the Helicopter crash he and Sarah was involved in and they both presented from their hospital bed in 1988:

And this is his appearance on the very controversial Ghostwatch in 1992:

He was a very big name on the BBC in the mid to late 80's. It's a big shame he's gone so soon. RIP.

It was called "That's Showbusiness"

Very sad news. A superb broadcaster, who will be missed.

Yes, started his radio career at Capital, during its 'glory' years. Was also one of BBC Breakfast's presenters.
Very sad news

Though Mike later said it was the worst show he'd ever done, he hated every minute of it because he thought it was so boring, though obviously he did his usual professional job.

Dreadful news, this, and I'm so glad everyone is speaking so fondly of him. For a generation he was a massive telly presence.

Did he pretty much give up TV (and radio it seems) after That's Showbusiness?
