I really love what Carlton have done with Central News (East and West), I hope they do it with CNSouth too, to 'complete the set'.

Wasn't it only after Carlton started 'eating into' Central that a South Midlands version of Central News was introduced?

Central News South was a welcome addition to Central Television's Regional News service.  It launched in 1989 and has proven to be a very high quality service.  The Regular presenters, Anne Dawson and Wesley Smith are excellent and this is probably why they have remained at Abingdon since day one.

The idea of introducing a news service for the south midlands was to assist Central with retaining its broadcasting licence.  They encouraged the itc to make the midlands tv licence a triple region.  It therfore was not the idea of Carlton Television.

I agree that it would be good if the new look introduced in the East and West was copied in the Central South Region.  Anybody know if they have any plans to do so?

nope - carlton's first became involved with central when they bought a 20% share in 1989 ... i doubt they were the driving force behind the south midlands service, as it would have taken months/years of planning - whilst the majotiry of the shares remained in the hands of central.

I do know that the 'new' look Central News came originally from Central East. It was their idea in the first place. Birmingham just copied them because their old look wasn't bringing in the viewers. Birmingham even copied the title music from CN East!

Central News East got the set in December 2000.

Central News West had it in October 2001 after almost a year's trial by CN East.

Central News South are due their new look in November/December, when their's and Central News East's astons will change to same as CN West's.
I do not know whether CN South will be getting the same sort of look as the other two, though. Their studio is a lot smaller than CN East's.

The reason for Central West's News set looking like Central East's set, is quite simple - the New Editor for Central News West is Dan Barton, formerly Editor for Central News East. Hence he has brought his style ideas, his set and some of his staff with him.

If another person had got the job, then the new set would have been different yet again. In fact the original plan for the new set, was a virtual set design, but then the new editor turned up Smile

It's highly unlikely that Central South will have a similiar set and style to East/West, as all three News sites usually do their own thing - the decision is down to the News Editor.

So there you go...

I know Dan Barton is the new editor in the West, but which 'staff' did he take with him? (I presume you mean reporters)

Jonathan Ray is now reporting for Central News West- what a comedown!

Llewela Bailey AND Jonathan Ray have gone to Birmingham. These were two of the three anchors (with Marie Ashby) of Central News East.

Llewela has lived in Birmingham since 1989 and presented Central News West until spring 2000, before she came to Central News East to anchor (originally to cover Marie's maternity leave, but she ended up staying because Dominic Heale defected to BBC East Midlands). She left at the end of August to return to Central News West- the same day as Dan Barton, Editor of CN East, so they both went together. If the editor had not gone, Llewela would have stayed in the East for longer, because Jonathan Ray (ultimately a reporter) ended up filling in for her until only last week with Marie. Jonathan lives with wife and daughter in Nottingham.

Personally, I didn't like Jonathan fronting Central News at Six with Marie.
Marie's newest co-star is Sarah Teale, who reports as well as producing Central News East.
Sarah is obviously not to stay with Marie, as she is not in the titles.

Also in the East, Annabel Tiffin is nowhere to be seen today. She usually presents the Friday afternoon bulletin, Friday's Central News at Six, the late Friday night bulletin and Saturday and Sunday bulletins. She lives in Leicester. Today's (friday) afternoon bulletin was presented by Sarah Teale, who presented at six with Marie.

With all these established presenters and reporters leaving, you can see why Central News East brought Carrie Frais in!
