Maybe they put him on so viewers on BBC 1 that don't have digital are watching someone they know and are familiar with. Instead of 2 Complete strangers. Even though I have digital I still don't know all of the presenters names.

Yeah, bit sad when DNC1 join N24 & we have to see the National presenter. Surely if N24 are doing the special, they should stick to N24 presenters. Does it really matter if Michael presents or not?
'This is BBC News, broadcasting on BBC World, News 24 and BBC1.' Says it all really.

I believe it was a management decision to have Michael presenting along with Gavin. Maybe they should have had Stephen Cole on set too?? Very Happy

Perhaps we could have had a montage of BBC Newsreaders dancing about like on that hilarious Children In Need trailer Smile

I spotted:

Jeremy Bowen playing the keyboard
Darren Jordon dancing in front of the camera in the BBC atrium
Mike Buerk dancing in the corrider outside the news studio
and Jenny Bond flitting about around that disused fountain at TVC!

v funny! Smile

I would not be surprised if it was a BBC ONE management decision as well as a BBC News decision.

ITV News specials have been fronted by ITV News presenters who the majority of viewers are familiar with, whilst the early News 24 simulcasts on BBC One were presented by people who were relatively unknown to BBC One viewers.

I think a decision has been taken to try to integrate BBC One presenters into the News 24 operation when a BBC One major news simulcast is mounted to cover breaking news, so as to make more sense to the majority of viewers in the UK, who will be watching on One.

The more regular scheduled BBC News Specials remain presented by BBC News 24/World correspondents and presenters?

It's not very often you see him sitting that side.

Usually the person who's sitting on the left (where Gavin is in that picture above) says 'This is BBC News 24, I'm...' and the person on the right is the first person to read the main news story at the top of the hour.

Did Michael say 'And I'm Michael Buerk' - if he did, iot'd be a first as we never hear the national presenters say their own names

No I think Michael said 'Welcome to a BBC News special with Michael Burerk and Gavin Esler.'

As far as i can remember they did the *.30 greeting:
Michael: This is a BBC News Special on BBC ONE and News 24 with Michael Buerk and Gavin Esler
Gavin: One headline tonight... etc

It was good to see Michael Buerk doing some News 24 on Monday - gives him something slightly more different to do than just the stale environment of the 10. I have to confess I dont like Buerk on the 10 - hes always too serious and introduces every story as if the world is about to come to an end, so it was refreshing to see him look a bit more ordinary. They should put Buerk and Peter Sissons on N24 or World or maybe the new BBC 4 news full time and put George Alagiah on the 10 in their place.
