A 10 oclock news wud also be unlikely. other than the mentioned competetion from the bbc most of itv's programs for the 9oclock timeslot last for 90mins.

As has been said, Simon Shaps wants to reduce the amount of 90 minute dramas in the 9pm slot. We start to see the first of the new ITV team's commissions next year so it'll be interesting to see if he has stayed true to his word.

A very decent report and interview with Michael Grade just now on C4. Straight from their opening titles they went to the News at Ten titles! Michael gave a fairly length interview in the studio and was pressed on brining news back to primetime. He said he'd look at it and gave the example of the American networks scaling back the cash spent on news but still at the heart of their primetime schedule. Also a bit about the BBC, saying ITV now should be more interested in what they're doing than what amount the BBC get next year.

As to NAT returning, can't see it and certainly can't see it being a success. The BBC regularly won that battle. The News at Ten as it was is long dead.

Agreed - brilliant bulletin there. He smiled when pushed about the News, and said it was something he'll be "looking at". He also mentioned "I am not interested in what the other networks are doing, I'm interested in what ITV are doing" and said he wants ITV to be the "most loved and talked about" channel as well as the most watched.

I can't wait to hear more of his plans.

The News at Ten of old certainly did not get beaten by the Nine on the BBC - it was king of the late bulletins on any channel. Yes, that programme is long gone, but there's no reason why it can't be brought back if the desire to compete is there.

I agree - if they show desire to compete and sort out the news so it is decent and high brow again, I see no reason why it cannot return to be the News at Ten again. Especially if the preceeding 9pm programme is successful.

Moving the news as it is to 10pm won't work - it needs to be more upmarket and ditch the tabloid tackiness.

Asa is probably referring to the period when ITV brought back News at Ten, and was up against the BBC Ten O'Clock News where the BBC did win almost every battle.

Here's a thought, though. Sky buy a stake in ITV when shares and moral are low. Now things look a bit brighter all of a sudden. Were Sky party to the appointment of Michael Grade?

Edit: I have seen the interview on the Channel 4 News website.
I would like NAT to return but the problems are that the BBC will get in the way and it won't be the same without Trevor McDonald and John Suchet.

The only news programme that really needs moving is the Lunchtime bulletin back to 12.30pm.

Bringing back News at Ten (again) would be an even bigger mistake than last time - if anything the 10.30pm bulletin needs moving back to 11pm - certainly the best slot (and virtually the highest rated!) since the original News at Ten was axed in 1999!

I wonder if he will suggest bringing back the ITV News Channel?

Having said that he says that he will be looking at what ITV are doing, not what anyone else are doing, so probably not

Very doubtful.

Sky IMHO bought 17.9% of ITV plc because they at some point in the future may be interested in a bid/would like a say in any potential takeover with another party. They also announced that they have no future plans to purchase more than 19.9%, which they are currently prohibited from doing.

If Sky were (somehow) party to the information that Grade joining ITV and used this information to profit they would be skating very close to insider trading - not that the news that Grade has joined ITV has had any immediate impact on their share price.

I'd like to see the News made much more important again on ITV1, and integral. An idea:

12.00 Lunchtime News (30 mins)
5.30 Regional News
7.00 Evening News -- Flagship bulletin
11.00 Late News -- More serious and analytical, 'Newsnight'-esque bulletin.

This would open up 7.30-11pm for programming and the six o'clock window. Six o'clock a decent chatshow, half seven the soaps, 8 o'clock some decent factual or current affairs, 9pm a cracking drama, ten o'clock a documentary and then the News at 11.

ITV could therefore justify pushing the News to 11pm by the Evening News being moved to 7 o'clock (further into primetime), and therefore free up a full 10pm slot. This would also mean a higher chance of uninterrupted films at 9pm

The news would return to being on the hour, and start ON TIME every time. I think this would be a better idea for ITV if they want to take News seriously, whilst still keeping ad revenue in consideration.
