After all these years in decline this is the shot in the arm ITV needs. Michael Grade is a man who actually knows the TV industry inside out, unlike that useless fool Charles Allen. I wonder what and indeed who is first for the axe?

Michael Grade- always was an ITV man. Good luck to him.

I wonder if there's a BBC-type person (someone who can balance populism and public service) left in broadcasting who'll be able to help the BBC respond to an improving ITV ?

(Do all TV executives now focus on commerce and strategy rather than on the making of memorable programmes ?)

Leave me some!!

This is excellent news. I think Grade will 'steady the ship' as it were and rejuvenate ITV into an excellent broadcaster.

Great idea. People are always saying that ITV won't return to its former self again but because they can't prove that it's gone for good and that ITV now have a TV Hero (according to Transdiffusion) on their side, I'd like to see ITV plc being turned around and perhaps more quality programming, less soaps, large cutdown on celebrity and chavvy filth, more local programming and he could slowly restore regional identity.

Anyway how much would it cost to stick a chevron or a G arrow on the screen and displaying it's name on a colourful background? Charles Allen would obviously never do that because to him money comes first and viewers second. But with Michael Grade who has helped out LWT, BBC1 and others, it could happen.

Having just watched Mark Thompson on BBC News, I must say I am impressed. He knows what he is doing, and will adapt to loosing a peice of his puzzle, but it won't wreck his game plan!

Good to see Mark Thompson on TV- he should appear more often. As Alison Graham suggests in this week's Radio Times, there should be a feedback programme for television- and he could appear on that.

There used to be just such a programme... produced by BBC Manchester and transmitted live as part of the daytime schedules in the late 80s - 'Open Air' it was called - presented by Eammon Holmes, amongst others. As far as I can remember, it wasn't bad.

And what about BiteBaCk? Or Points of View? Aren't/weren't they feedback programmes?

And Patty Cauldwell. It was a great show. I remember lots of behind the scenes stuff.

MediaGuardian are reporting about the possibility of a return for News at Ten all based on the fact that Michael Grade said he'd be looking at the slots allocated to news.

Quote:
News at Ten could be brought back to ITV1 under a raft of proposals being considered by incoming executive chairman Michael Grade.

ITV's executive chairman said that he understood the importance that news played in the schedule of a big network and that he would examine its role on ITV1.

"I think news is very very important for a big network. And it is very interesting that in the competitive situation in America, although they've cut back the investment in news on the major networks, they're still there in prime time, they're still an important part of saying to the world 'we are a serious network'," he told Channel 4 News. When asked if he would change the news from its current time slots of 1.30pm, 6.30pm and 10.30pm, Grade replied: "I said I am going to look at it."

The return of News at Ten could be just one part of Mr Grade's ambition for ITV1, which he told reporters on a conference call was to make it "not just the most watched, but the most loved and the most talked about" channel on British television.

"Its strengths need to be in originated British produce for British audiences."

Mr Grade will look to inject the same sort of excitement into ITV's schedules that he effortlessly generated among staff when he skipped into ITV headquarters on Gray's Inn Road this morning.

For the first time in over 10 years, I can now see a future for ITV. Although much younger and less knowing of ITV, I knew something was wrong the day "Carlton" appeared on our screens in September 1999, and when "ITV1" took its place in 2002, it was definately a channel I watched less. Its programming I think has suffered the most, with Charles Allen's (*spit spit spit*) 2004 plan to invest over £100million back in to programming after merger - biggest lie I've ever heard from the company. I hope with Grade's vast experience in television (and indeed, the ITV Network itself), he can turn ITV's fortunes around to become a truly excellent broadcaster.

could this actually mean the return of the old traditional ITV news slots...

ITV News at One

ITV News at 530 (although it was originally 540 but in todays TV world of programmes starting at 00 and 30 - except for Saturdays!!!)

ITV News at Ten

Now that would be interesting and much better than how it is today - although the 1pm and 10pm would be directly competing with BBC (which the viewer have more regard than ITV) whilst the 530 would be directly competing with five - who would win that slot - ITV/ITN or five/SKY????

There again its all hypothetical - lets just see what he does when he does start his job in January.

I think the evening news will remain in it's current slot but I think the return of News At Ten is a strong possibility. One thing is for sure, it seems Michael Grade wants ITV to take news more seriously - which is fantastic news.

Also just reading another article on MG, it suggests that stars such as Paul O'Grady who left ITV, would be more likely to return now that they're under new management.

Interesting times lie ahead, that's for sure...
