Perhaps Grade would even be brave enough to bring back ITV's regional identities, instead of the generic corporate nonsense we've had to put up with over the last several years.

I'm sure on the 1st January Mr Grade will sit in the boardroom and say "right, what about that chevron and cake then" ?

I wonder if the current Director of Programmes will last for long though...

That particular post has had a revolving door fitted in recent years Laughing

lol, if he's even in the boardroom. "First change - all board meetings live from wherever that crappy Love Island thing was - it had to come in useful sometime"

Great news by the way. **chomps on chevron and cake**

The BBC will be furious tonight for quite a few reasons. Yes, ITV have poached their Chairman, but it's Sky News who are doing the immediate damage...

News 24 want to talk about the breaking news, but can't because Jeff Randal - now Daily Telegraph reporter, and the man who broke the news - is speaking to Sky! Worse still, straight after Randal, Sky have Ray Snoddy, presenter of Newswatch!!!! So the BBC have no-one to talk about the resignation of their Chairman, and Sky have two men who are closely linked to the BBC! Not even Nick Higham's around to save them! They had to go to sport!

Seems to be part of a considered strategy by ITV to poach all who have made BBC1 our most watched station in recent months. They've already swiped the creative talent - Billie Piper, Chris Eccleston, Catherine Tate, now they've poached the man to run the sinking ship.

ITV are running scared - they know they can't outsmart the Beeb so they've resorted to stealing the stars, who look set to pocket more money for inferior projects. Very sad, almost pathetic.

From Broadcast:

Michael Grade to head ITV
Dan Wootton
10:00pm
ITV has pulled off a massive coup by poaching BBC chairman Michael Grade to become executive chairman and run the commercial broadcaster.

The senior management of the BBC is said to be "completely shocked" and "incandescent with rage" about the move, according to The Daily Telegraph editor at large Jeff Randall who broke the story. The news has come at a highly sensitive time for the corporation, which is in the midst of sensitive license fee negotiations with the government.

Randall said Grade is expected to fill the dual roles of chairman and chief executive for two years. At that point he will "move upstairs" to become chairman and look to appoint a new chief executive.

It is understood acting ITV chief executive John Cresswell will become chief operating officer under Grade.

ITV is expected to announce the appointment at 7.30am tomorrow.

And how did Grade make his name at LWT? By poaching Bruce Forsyth from The Generation Game in 1978. He's the best Director General the BBC never had and is a programme lover at heart. ITV aren't going to be a joke anymore.

Lets just hope Grade will do a decent job at ITV - they're needing a boost.

Interesting to see the BBC (allegedly) showing their anger towards Grade (considering the news isn't official out yet).

This is the best Christmas present ITV could hope for. Michael Grade turned BBC 1 around in the mid 80s by completely revitalising the schedule.

Not for the better, in my humble opinion.

Even if Grade does succeed in turning round ITV1, have you thought about how the BBC might respond ie. taking a more populist route?

You're pretty much alone in that opinion. Have a look at that Transdiffusion article posted by Whataday earlier - BBC1 was a mess before he took over.

It's worth remembering however that at BBC1 he did a diffrent job to what he will be doing at ITV.
