Really?

Certainly not the worst option (who was probably Mandleson).

On the plus side he has the background and certainly a similar attitude to Greg Dyke

On the negative side though he could quite well fall over the same way that Greg did..... he has a background in entertainment, but not really news. If the editorial heat is on again for the BBC history could be repeated

That aside, if it's true, a good move

Bit of an obscure time to announce it... half past midnight?!

But we're talking about the role of Chairman here, not Director General, or am I missing something?

Yes, but if it happens again the Chairman will need a journalistic background

OMG...this is a disaster. Remember what this man did to BBC1 in the 1980s? And then he only had one channel to play with. Now the entire corporation risks being on a slippery slope towards populism even more so than at present.

Nevet thought I'd say this but I think I'd have actually preferred Lorraine Heggessey.

Surely this is excellent news for afficionados of Eastenders ?

Hello!!! Do people here actually know how the BBC operates? Obviously not.

We've got people saying "look what he did to BBC ONE, now he's got the whole BBC to play with" - no he hasn't! He's CHAIRMAN of the board of Governors. Not DG. The DG is in charge, the Chair appoints the DG.

It's very rare for the Chair to have any effect on actual programmes.
