Bit like your birth then JM.

I still think the problem with current forecasters is all to do with the R word. *recorded* - it just takes away the charm from the broadcasts, Dan Corbett excluded of course.

Who is the longest serving BBC Weatherman now?

Is it Rob McElwee?

Yes, along with Peter Cockroft they both joined in 1991. Peter now only just seems to do weather for BBC London. Penny Tranter is the longest serving female forecaster, having joined in 1993.

This page on the BBC's website has all the info.

Wonder why he left? I could be wrong but wasn't Peter Cockroft on screen before Rob McElwee? Then there was Bernard Davey, who had to leave because of his MS.

My mate in France has phoned in saying we're getting a freak blizzard tonight... trust me when I say it's totally false, it's not going to happen.

Very Happy

Nah, just that everyone always edits out the "but there will be some very strong winds" part that immediately proceeds the hurricane statement.

You know, this week I've heard from so many people about the 'hurricane' of 1987. I've been through every category of hurricane and was here in '87 - sorry, but that was just a big wind, not a real hurricane. What a bunch of wimps! I will miss Mr. Fish, I like him.

There was no hurricane - hurricanes are tropical winds. And Great Britain isn't in the tropics.

Does anyone remember in the late 80's/early 90's (days of the COW) when they used to present the weather from a studio sitting at a desk and have a monitor next to them with the maps on it (which would then be put on screen so the viewer could see them) so we had a forecast with an out-of-vision forecaster? Or have I eaten too much sherbet again?

Oh yes, I remember that! I think it was just for daytime forecasts

Was it like this - although this is obviously a Christmas summary.

Yes that's exactly what I was thinking of! Thanks for that.

Neither is Florida or any part of the northern mainland US, is it?
