I'm sorry but how can Steve Jobs be more powerful than Rupert Murdoch? Steve Jobs is quite high up but i wouldn't say number 2!

And Charles Allen? Riggghttt.....

Curious that Gates scores so highly, since really apart from MSNBC I can't think of any major media interests MS have, and I thought they had reduced their influence in MSNBC some time ago. Combined with his attempts to reposition himself as more of a philanthropist - apart from whoring out the Xbox 360 to MTV, he's hardly an influential media mogul.

You are both thinking of Media to narrowly.

Steve Jobs think iTunes, iPod, iMac, Podcasts etc.
The iTunes Music Store podcast chart is the no.1 distribution chain for podcasts in the world.

Yes but Rupert Murdoch owns the Media, and is a much more established name in the Media than Steve Jobs. Yes Jobs has been around for decades, but it's only been in the last 5 years that he's appeared in the media market. And even so only the music market. Yes he has Pixar, but they aren't as massive as the Murdoch empire surely.

Is the use of an Apple computer (c. 1976) not a form of media?

Apple Computers are used in the Media industry, but so are pencils. Would you class the CEO of a stationary company as part of the media just because their products happened to be used in the industry as well as many others? I would say the only part of Apple which could be classed as in the media is the iTunes Music Store. Yes it's a revolutionary thing and has changed the world, but i wouldn't class him higher than Rupert Murdoch. His Disney/Pixar involvement isn't exactly BBC, or News Corporation either is it?

Can you watch TV programmes or listen to radio programmes on a pencil?

I think that the main diffrence is that Jobs is in the ascendancy, whereas Murdoch has been around for a while, is gearing up for retirement and isn't as influencial as he once was. In a popularity poll, a lot more people would vote for Jobs over Murdoch. The only thig hat Murdoch has going for him at the moment is Myspace, which is currently the in-thing. Whether this gives him any power is another matter

On the other hand I'd disagree wit you about iTunes - it's not exactly unique or revolutionary (I would say that Napster beat them to it in terms of digital audio), nor was the iPod the first of it's kind, or some may argue the best of its type. It's popular and influencial though, mainly because of the branding and aesthetics and it becoming fashionable

Well no, but that reply was just an answer to the argument of Steve Jobs' personal computer empire being a factor of him being so high.

Napster just invented a way of illegally transferring music over the internet. Napster were talked about a lot yes but were never in the marketplace because they were of course an illegal website at the time. Apple were revolutionary in that they were the first company to really get the general public into buying music legally over the internet and playing it on an MP3 player on the move. The idea of transferring music over the internet and playing it on an MP3 player wasn't revolutionary when Apple started it yes, but they were the ones who essentially won over the market, what with the stylish and eventually must-have iPod. The success of the iPod led their Music Store to be just as popular because they were marketed together. It's just the Betamax/VHS thing really. One may have come earlier, and perhaps of been better, but the other knew how to work the market more, and perhaps just got lucky.

I never understand how people like Jonathan Ross get so high up these lists. He hosts a chatshow and a radio programme... surely someone like Dawn Airey should be higher up than him?!
