John Humphrys has announced in his Daily Mail column that after 18 years he is packing in Mastermind after the end of the current series

Given his age, not too surprising but 18 years is a good run.

My choice would be Emma Barnett or Emily Maitlis.

Feels alot longer than 18 years. I was thinking actually the other day in light of the Australian version also changing their presenter whether there could be mileage in following their format of running it daily over 17 weeks, with 16 weeks of heats plus weekly finals, then the 16 weekly winners back for a finals week.

I suspect Mastermind will remain in primetime, it's a good companion for BBC Two's Monday night quizzes.

When it first moved to Belfast pilots were recorded with Humphreys' Today colleague, Kathy Clugston. She's also in the credits sometimes as a question setter. Though she's perhaps too associated with radio.

I can remember watching Magnus Magnusson's last episode when the show was supposedly ending "for good"... Then Clive Anderson did a series for the discovery channel not long after, then it came back to the BBC with Humphries.

Cathy might have been more than happy to do non-broadcast pilots than a full blown series.

Replacements? Keep it in the Today family with Justin Webb. Has the rapid fire nature and can have a bit of tension lightening banter with the contestants.

And to stop the 'anyone but another white early 50 something white male' brigade start tapping on their keyboards - Clive Myrie. Won't be a bad shout either.

I agree with choosing Justin Webb. A long shot could be BT Sport rugby presenter Martin Bayfield.

Maxine Mawhinney!

No suggestion will ever beat that suggestion for Angela Merkel to host one of these shows a few months back.

I’d suggest Kirsty Wark
Alfie Mulcahy and Brekkie gave kudos

I've always thought German chancellor Angela Merkel could have been a perfect host of TWL. I know she doesn't speak a word of English and is rather busy with the day job, but had she found herself at a loose end work wise...and could speak English she could of/would of been a great host of the show!!

You've gotta admit my suggestion is quite a good on. I could really see Angela behind the podium, giving out dirty looks and putdowns to the contestants on TWL.

Back to Mastermind....I'm not sure who I'd pick but would like to see a female host...Fiona Bruce? Carrie Gracie? Victoria Derbyshire?
