I do notice however that all the comments to that story on the mail's site are people saying exactly what we're saying, that to not report it would be for the show not to do its duty and that kids would look to Newsround as they'd hear about it anyhow.

Not exclusively. Jeremy Vine had the same complaint on his show.

Probably the same people moaning who were on that channel 4 documentary about cotton wool kids last week.

But isn't Newsround an irrelevance now anyway.
Most kids I know of watchable age are already downloading news to their phone so they're up to speed when buying underage cider and fags from the local Indian corner shop whilst planning a happy slap and gang bang of one of their mates.
To be honest - they all thought Mark Speight was a middle-aged tosser anyway.
