Yes,he seemed a likeable fellow.
Liked to do lots of drugs with his younger, impressionable girlfriend who died as a result.
So then decides to take his life in a very public place without thinking of the poor sod who will probably suffer for years from the shock of finding his body ( and pity the poor sod when the body had been strung up for six days. )
Of course death - whether accidental or self-inflicted - is a sad affair.
But let's not eulogise a minor children's TV presenter who chose to avoid taking responsibility for his life and caused untold misery.

How did he get up there? Sad

It wasn't actually on the station concourse... the arrow is pointing to an office which is out of public view but in that area next to platform one, he was found in the ceiling rafters of that office.

Apparently he may have gotten in through a door which is normally locked by a keypad but may have been left ajar by a workman.

Thanks for splitting the thread Charlie.

I have to say I'm really upset about the news of Mark's death. He was an extremely talented artist who was respected by his friends and colleagues. He will be sorely missed.

This is how Newsround covered it on their short updates:

I'm impressed at how well Newsround handled what must have been a very difficult story to cover - very sensitively done, not patronising, and actually rather moving.

To be fair though you have to take into account what state of mind he was in. Police who had seen him at Kilburn had said he was acting suspiciously & asked if he wanted a doctor or someone to come for him but he walked off.

Surely that's a sign of a person who isn't in a full state of mind & couldn't be fully in control of his own actions.

I met Mark in 1993 when I appeared with him on The Children's Channel on which he was a presenter at the time. I remember him being very pleasant, and I still have a photograph with him and the cartoon he drew as a souveneir, even the video of the day. It's going to be pretty wrenching watching that again. So this has come as quite a shock and very sad news indeed. RIP Mark.

Well the people who complained are getting the same hard time on the POV message board!

But in all seriousness, if Newsround (a news programme for children) failed to report the death of a popular children's presenter it would be failing in its duty. Newsround has handled the issue most sensitively and there is nothing to be gained from shielding children from this matter.

Pfft... "A listener?" They're almost always made up by the article writer and is usually their next-door-neighbour.

Genuine quotes from that article:

Quote:
One parent rang BBC Radio 2 to complain, saying: "I am very angry that the children's BBC website is reporting the death of Mark Speight."

One listener said: "I am very angry that the children's BBC website is reporting the death of Mark Speight. It is sick and appalling.

Quote:
"It is not the pampered middle-class children who that story will depress.

"It is already vulnerable children from awful homes who look to children's TV as the last place of comfort.

OK --- so suddenly the Mail is an expert on middle-class children's emotional sensitivites AND has time to patronise the broken-home culture it has invented ... Isn't this the same Mail that says children from broken homes turn to violence, guns and drugs as their last place of comfort?

Fortunately those responding to the article underneath in the comments section seem to be a bit more sensible.

From BBC News...

A suicide note was found on the body of children's TV presenter Mark Speight who was found hanged in central London, a coroner's court has heard.

Another note was discovered at the 42-year-old's flat in St John's Wood, north-west London.
