I'm guessing that Radios 1 and 2 are hooked up to the same computer network, which would presumably give them access to each other's audio servers.
If they both use the same playout system then it wouldn't really be a problem - I know that Radio 1 use VCS, but I'm not sure about Radio 2. Does anyone else know?

I'd have thought it would be more likely that jingles and music are on a central server. Wouldn't it be the case that Sara Cox, for example, would "log in" and have access to the Radio 1 bits and pieces even if using a Radio 2 studio? I'd have thought it would be highly unlikely they "grab a few CDs" - music is WAV, and this would surely be available wherever the computer is that is accessing the music?
well a central server did News24 a lot of good when they had a power cut...

Oh come on, that's completely and utterly different. The point I was trying to make was that Radio 1 staff wouldn't be running across the road with bundles of CDs they could grab. The jingles and music would surely be available from any BBC studio - I don't know how the system works, but there must be a central access to these things regardless of whether the studio is a Radio 1 or Radio 2 studio.

Well judging by the amount of computer monitors Radio 1 has and the amount Radio 2 has, it seems to me that Radio 2 does not use the same system as Radio 1, as it seems to only have bog standard computer gear.

The furthest one of the left is definately a computer as I can just make out the BBC wallpaper and white Windows 2000 login box in one of the pics. The other three ones I have no idea what they are for - I assume they are for the playout system.

The one with the screen facing towards the camera looks like a bog standard computer of some kind, just like the one on the furthest left in the Radio 1 picture.
Perhaps someone could tell us what they are for?!

Radio 1 is on VCS Dira. Radio 2 has no computer playout system yet. Just a mechanical set of CD Jukeboxes fed to the 3 main studios. Jingles for R2 come off Minidisc, music off CD or the Jukeboxes. Radio 2 will go onto VCS in the next year or so.

It would depend where the server is, if it's in Youlding House which is without power then it's entirely the same as N24's problem. I have a sneaking suspicion that Radio 2 is still using CDs rather than computerised playout at the moment.
You may be right though, Moyles didn't seem to be having any problems with playout when he was at BBC Newcastle a few weeks back.

That's one thing I had in the back of my mind. I don't know how these things work, but I have the impression that a presenter can "plug themselves in" to the studios instead of taking the necessary bits and pieces with them.
