Recordings and shows for other stations go on during the spare time in each studio.

Which raises the question of who's going where when drivetime starts at 1700...

...although the "News" studio is in fact the one running the network, with the announcer who's reading the news also signalling to the programme's SM when they are about to be put on air.

This happened a few weeks ago, just not the changing of studio's. Zane Lowe, went off air for about 2mins, then something cut in, and returned to the studio, where was announced was having "Problems", then later when they cut to the 11'oclock newsbeat bulletin ,there was just the backing music for about 1min, then presenter cut in.

How are they managing to playout all of the music and jingles from the Radio 2 studio? I would have thought that Radio 1 and Radio 2 would have been seperate

A lot of Radio 2 comes from Birmingham also. Janice Long, Alex Lester, Mo Dutta...

I used to listen to Janice on the night-shift, and noticed that the night time presenters are based in Birmingham. But why? Is that where they all live?

AFAIK, Radio 2 has a duty to provide shows that are broadcast outside of London and in the regions... shoving the overnight shows in Pebble Mill sorts this out. Janice and Alex Lester live in Birmingham. Janice also does 6Music two hours before the midnight show!

Don't forget dear old Desmond Carrington, who broadcasts from his home in Scotland.

Alex lives on a canal barge and moves around a lot. Mo Dutta also presents on the Asian Network's breakfast which also comes from Birmingham. I think Janice lives in the North West and commutes down the M6 every night. Can't think what else on Radio 2 comes from Birmingham.

The Asian Network programming there comes from BBC WM's second studio (some of AN comes from Leicester, so not always hogging WM's space) - they both close down at night so I guess it's more convenient to use their studio space in Birmingham for those presenters.

Yes, that's what I understood too. She gets the train down from Birmingham when they need her in London.
