And in off-topic yet interesting to ppl cos they've spoken about it before-news:

Mark and Lard are leaving Radio 1 soon. Mark will be heading over to Radio 2, while Lard will present a new show on 6Music from the Spring. The speculation about their future has been going on for ages, but Broadcast magazine says they're off at last and will be replaced by Scott Mills or Bowman/Murray.

Remember Sara Cox is off on maternity leave soon so both Scott Mills AND Colin & Edith will be in the afternoon soon.

I was going to say that I'd prefer Scott Mills to Sara Cox then Embarassed but I think you'd have all got the wrong idea! What I mean is I'd prefer to listen to Scott than Sara. Sara's wasted on radio anyway, we should be able to see her!

I think it should be...

Nemone, Chris Moyles, Jo Whiley, Scott Mills, Colin & Edith, Dave Pierce, Zane Lowe

Not that I didn't like M/L but, well put it this was, they'll be no blood lost if they leave! Will miss Sara though! Scott should have the current M/L slot full-time, and Colin/Edith in the evening, possibly move Dave Pierce back a few hours.

BTW - which student radio station did you start at? I was at LSR (Leeds Student Radio)...

I started at Altered Radio - the Oxford University station that launched about a year ago. I was in my final year at the time, so probably should have been writing essays instead, but couldn't resist the chance to get involved!

To be honest, it didn't do much to help me get a job in radio straight away, but once I managed to get a foot in the door of a professional radio station, the technical skills I'd picked up at Altered were a huge asset.

As for Mark & Lard, I'm very sorry to hear that they're not only leaving Radio 1, but also going their separate ways - IMHO they were one of the greatest radio double-acts of all time. I hope Scott Mills gets their slot, as he always does a great job filling in for them. This announcement seems to fit in with the arrival of JK and Joel later this year - I was wondering how their new show would fit in with the current weekend line-up, but now I expect they'll take over from either Scott or Colin and Edith.

I'm at LSR now (first year at Leeds) and I presented a 2 hour weekly media programme in December, along with being a news reporter - it was quite easy to get involved here really.

I didn't realise it was such a bugger to get into student radio at some unis. I joined mine at the deep end and now, still in the first year, have my own one hour show plus two hour show on FM.

I bet Scott Mills will take over M/L slot and JK & Joel will step in to cover the weekend gap left by Scott. Or on the other hand radio 1 may have another reshuffle in presenters although you can bet your life they wont move Chris Moyles.

Depends partly on when you try to get in, and partly on how the station's run. The best time to join is at the beginning of a year when they'll normally be advertising for new people (to replace all the students who have graduated/left the station/been kicked out of the uni). Joining up once the schedule's been put together can be more difficult - as shows are sometimes fairly self-contained (ie each DJ/presenter etc will work on his own show by himself/with his mates).

Well I'd like to think before I left I helped make it more accessible to new students than it used to be Wink

You'll know Fergus and Rich then, I hear they're doing a pretty good job running the News Team so far...

Yeah I know Fergus and Rich - the news was really good last broadcast, and Fergus is training me to be a daily news editor at the moment. The next broadcast is on 27th April I think...

MediaGuardian seem fairly sure Colin and Edith are replacing Mark and Lard. Seems a strange choice to me, as I had Colin and Edith down as suited to a slightly younger audience (who are presumably at school at 1pm). Would make more sense to put them on at 3pm, and move Cox to 1pm?

However, I'd prefer to see Scott Mills on daytimes - I'm thinking Radio 1 must have something bigger lined up for him, as there were pretty strong rumours the weekend was only a holding job for him to give him a bit of a rest. Also seems strange that he's covering for M+L this week if he's not getting it when they leave....

So apparent schedule would be:
4am - Nemone
7am - Moyles
10am - Whiley
1pm - Colin and Edith
3pm - Sara Cox (although Scott Mills while she's giving birth)
6pm - Dave Pearce

Just looking at that, I'm thinking Mills might replace Dave Pearce (as he's the most tired-sounding DJ left on the station).

Yeah - I can't stand Dave Pearce. His 'big shaaaaat aaaaaat' style just gets on my nerves so I'd love to see the back of him.

I agree that Colin and Edith shouldn't be on from 1-3 - they're definitely popular with the kids, and also the afternoon slot is a bit of a 'cult' thing - popular with the students - which suits Scott Mills much better.

To be honest, Sara Cox is just dead wood and I very much doubt she'll return after she goes on maternity leave. Her current show is the perfect slot for Colin and Edith in my opinion.

Not sure why MediaGuardian are being so confident about Colin and Edith replacing Mark and Lard - they're even saying "the BBC announced" it, when in fact the BBC is actually saying that the replacement will be announced in March.
