And that when bidding for a rail franchise they have to set up a uniquely named limited company, not the same as anyone has used before or what any of the other bidders are using that are often very corporate sounding and generally stay in the background. Virgin Trains is actually called West Coast Trains Limited for example.

Arriva Rail North shouldn't really be used in anything public facing, getting back to TV it annoys me that when reporting on the strikes, the broadcasters refer to Arriva Rail North one day and Northern the next day. I expect it depends on if the press release comes from Northern or the RMT.

Slightly off topic - but there was a whole ad break on ITV around 11.10am devoted to Tunnocks and their Caramel Wafers etc. I'd expect it on STV but was surprised to see it shown here in the Midlands.

Spotted that one out of the corner of my eye on ITV HD too, although I didn't have the capture card running by the time I'd realised they'd taken over the entire break with a load of their classic campaigns. Thankfully there's always ITV+1!

Well, their products are sold in England, so why wouldn't they advertise? I like those Caramel Wafers, and I see the packaging has hardly ever changed at all.

Neon Radio. Never heard much about it after their publicity blitz.

Does anyone know if Howard has a Twitter or something?

He did. There's a couple of parody accounts, but the 'real' one (suspect ran by Halifax themselves) last activity was 2013.

Wait, is that his real name or is it just an actor name?

Isn't that actually a case of keeping alive an active brand? Northern was the brand name of the previous franchisee. When Arriva took over, they changed the logo but kept the name.

No it's to do with the DaFT wanting generic brands for franchises which could more easily transfer over when the franchise changes hands from one company to another. Most rail franchises now have generic names; Arriva Trains Wales and the two Virgin Trains groups being the last remaining odd ones out. When Arriva took over Northern they kept the name and colour scheme but rolled out a new logo and house style. Greater Anglia have lost their "Abellio", Great Western and Transpennine Express have lost their "First", and when Arriva lose the Wales & Borders this October, the new franchisee will be operating trains under the banner of Transport For Wales, or some similar generic branding.
